Meet Kimberly Gafter and Jennifer Duncan of Cake in Mission Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Gafter, Jennifer Duncan.

Kimberly, Jennifer, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We started out as dancing buddies in our 20’s. We both wanted to incorporate food and art into our lives, and we made a plan to get some real-life experience. Jenn went to The Culinary Institute in San Francisco, and I (Kimberly) worked in sales, kitchens, fooled around with my own art and waited

We started out with just the two of us, raising toddlers during the day and building our business at night. We got busy quickly and started adding a few employees throughout the years. We got very lucky and found a fantastic graphic artist and a terrific sculptor and we all learned and grew together. This combination took us to the next level and got us invited to The Food Network. We went on to win all three Cake Wars competition, the last one competing against other winner. We also taped our first reality show, called Ridiculous Cakes, also on The Food Network, which will air in February and March 2018.

Our promise to ourselves and our clients is quality, from our handpicked ingredients to all of our cakes baked from scratch; our desire to offer the best of ourselves will always come through.
We have always been and will always a be female owned and run bakery.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
With only us two as partners running the business for the first three years, finding a way to balance being moms, quality time with our families and friends was the toughest part. We worked so many late nights, and learned hard lessons as we went along, but never compromised our promise to give our best We are truly fortunate to be such great friends, and that helped us to use laughter to deal with obstacles and harder challenges.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Cake – what should we know?
We buy our ingredients weekly, bake every item from scratch, hand beat our chocolate mousse and frost everything in real, white chocolate butter cream. All of our designs are custom, created with our clients. We make all of our decor by hand, out of modeling chocolate and choose not to use fondant. Our team works incredibly well together, we all bring different talents and ideas to create one of a kind designs and wedding cakes. We also delivery our own cakes, preferring to be the finishing touch.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Kindness and persistence. When a client hires us, it always for an important day or event in their lives. We take our commitment to full filling their vision very seriously, and we do not feel successful unless they are truly happy.

This starts from their phone call or appointment and our ability to understand their wishes, creating a recipe or combination of flavors to wow their palette and delivering the cake of their dreams.

  • We bake cakes for thirty people or larger
  • We start at $225.00
  • Wedding Cakes start at $7 a slice
