Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimi Evans.
Kimi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I had some back issues and was looking for a pilates studio about 10 years ago. The least costly place I could find was $60 per session. I knew that would be too costly to do everyday. Then a friend introduced me to Pilates Plus in Los Angeles. It was the first time I had seen a large group pilates session. I thought it was genius! And only about $200 per month. Now that was much more affordable than $60-$80 per day! I tried it and fell in love with the Lagree method. I decided to get certified as an instructor…then decided to open a studio so others could also benefit from group training. I wanted to offer an opportunity for people to get in shape without injuring themselves. And that’s how Pilates Plus Pacific Beach came to be!
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but it’s been an exciting one. It taught me how to do everything since I had to wear so many hats…janitor, owner, marketing, PR, sales, graphics, hiring, management, delegating, training, and so much more! I’ve had times when things were amazing and smooth, and times when I was mopping up a mess in the middle of the night due to a massive storm and roof leak. There was a lot of trial and error, but ultimately, it was about creating a community. We’ve been blessed with amazing clients and I’m forever grateful for the many years of excitement with the PPPB!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Pilates Plus Pacific Beach story. Tell us more about the business.
In my case, it’s a little different because I’m also a meteorologist and work at a news station. For a couple of years, I just ran the studio, but eventually was recruited back to a TV station. So I’ve been doing both…working in news and running a studio. It’s been a lot of work, but I’m proud of having created something that provides a sense of community for people, a place to get a safe, fun, & effective workout, and a way for people to earn a living. We specialize in workouts that are safe and core centric. Everything we do is about strengthening the core. I’m proud that we are pilates based, but offer more…hence the name Pilates PLUS. 🙂
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I don’t think pilates based workouts will go anywhere since there’s such a strong and proven history in this type of workout. But I do think more and more people will see the need for core training.
