Meet Kirstin Hare of Wee Buddies

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kirstin Hare.

Kirstin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Becoming a mother of two boys is really where it all started for me. I have always been creative, and I loved the idea of owning my own business, but it wasn’t until I had my boys that my creative problem-solving flourished. The first Wee Buddies was made out material I found in my kids’ craft bin. I made it on a whim to quickly solve a problem that started when my son realized that he had the option to stand while using the potty, but not quite the will or patience to aim throughout the process. I couldn’t stand the mess, not to mention I was about to embark on potty training my youngest and needed the bathroom dry and “slip free”. My little prototype worked like a charm. In fact, it worked so well for my eldest in the toilet and for my youngest to use at the bottom of his little training potty, I just knew I needed to pursue this idea.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth ride? No. A dry one? Yes. I was a stay-at-home mom and my husband was working long hours. I didn’t know a thing about product development, so I needed to learn everything from scratch with very little free time and even less energy. I worked at night while everyone was asleep. It was a struggle turning my work/creative mode on and off by the minute, dealing with nap strikes and all the mom tasks that needed to be a priority. Finding that balance and energy was probably the biggest challenge.

Wee Buddies – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Wee Buddies is a color changing toilet target you can attach inside the toilet and/or at the bottom of a training potty that encourages kids to use the potty and to aim. Once the Wee Buddies target is hit, it magically reveals one of four Wee Buddies characters: Tinkle the Turtle, Whiz the Walrus, Surge the Shark, and Piddle the Penguin.

It is always important to me to teach my kids about independence. As important as that is to me, it was always tricky to remember to build their independence and to not just do everything by shadowing them because it saved time or was easier. I wanted Wee Buddies to be something you didn’t have to think twice about – – just put it in the toilet and leave it there. When you are ready to replace it or change out the characters, you can. Wee Buddies also is a fun reminder for kids to flush because they love watching the Wee Buddies go back into hiding. It’s fun for the kids and I’m pretty proud of it.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Nothing is better than receiving a product review confirming that Wee Buddies does exactly what I made it do.

Starting this project with zero knowledge and 100% naivety, and then proving to myself I was capable of creating a working product that people love and actually works really well to toilet train has been amazing. Every time I sell a Wee Buddies online, I feel a rush of joy and pride.
