Meet Kathryn Upchurch of Knead It! Massage Therapy in Mission Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Upchurch.

Kathryn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My journey to massage therapist began years ago when I was a professional dancer/actor/choreographer. I found a Medical Massage therapist who got me through all of my injuries big and small. I had weekly sessions to keep my body working optimally. After many years of performing I was looking for a change and immediately decided to go back to school and train as a Massage Therapist to help others achieve wellness.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a smooth road so far-knock on wood! I was fortunate to get my massage therapy education from the prestigious New York Institute of Massage. I learned from amazing Chiropractors, Naturopathic Drs, and Top Notch Massage Therapists. I then moved to Bloomington, IN where I worked alongside and was mentored by fantastic massage therapists who were working with World class Olympic athletes who were training at Bloomington University. After moving to San Diego 5 years ago with my husband and knowing no one, I was able get my practice up and running within 2 years.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I have tried to create a welcoming, friendly and relaxing environment. I will give helpful stretches and ideas for reducing pain and increasing healing in between sessions. I use a combination of techniques (Deep tissue, Swedish, Myoskeletal, Myofascial, prenatal, trigger point, etc) to create one of a kind massages. Each client gets a unique session tailored to their needs that day. When booking a massage time, my clients are booking hands on time. So a 60 minute massage is a full 60 min plus. I always allow additional time for greeting and finding out what is going on with a client that day, letting the client take a breath before jumping on the massage table, talking about the session afterwards, helpful suggestions for stretches and payment and additional bookings. I am most proud of my client retention and referrals. I work with many family units (moms, daughters, husband’s, children, and grandparents). One member came in and then the rest of the family followed 🙂

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
San Diego is a wonderful city for Massage Therapy. The residents are always looking for alternative methods for keeping themselves healthy and active. I do think that the California Massage Council is working to raise the level of training and raise awareness to the general consumer as to who are legitimate, and highly skilled therapists.
