Meet Kristi Colby and Stacey Hernandez of The Hair & Make Up Box

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristi Colby and Stacey Hernandez.

Kristi and Stacey, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Kristi: What an amazing journey it has been. Working in the industry for over a decade, I started my journey as a hair and make-up artist within the beauty pageant industry. I was born and raised as a beauty pageant queen, and couldn’t escape the love and passion for beauty and fashion. My mother and grandmother inspired me to be the entrepreneur that I am today. I’ve had experience working with several make up lines such as MAC and Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. I was also a featured makeup artist on TLC’s Toddlers and Tiaras. All of this has lead up to developing a niche in the wedding industry. I found my true passion working with brides on their big day.

About 4 years ago, I had the pleasure of connecting with my partner in crime Stacey Hernandez. She comes from a background in dance and is a licensed cosmetologist from Paul Mitchell. She was the best addition to what I had going. We connected at a mutual friend’s wedding where Stacey was styling hair and I was handling the makeup. It was a perfect match! Ever since then we’ve developed The Hair & Make up Box into a successful bridal hair and makeup team, and been featured on local wedding magazine covers and styled shoots. I’m the free spirited, master communicator and Stacey has a calm, grounding way about her and is truly my confidant, together we beautify up to 80-90 bridal parties a year.

Has it been a smooth road?
Stacey: It hasn’t always been a smooth road. For anyone taking the leap into self-employment it can be scary. There is no one else responsible but you and we both had to work multiple jobs while we built up our clients and reputation. Luckily, we both took the leap into our artistry separately, trusting our abilities and believing we could be successful artists. Collaborating has helped us make better business decisions and elevate our own work to continue getting better and better. We are always learning and challenging each other to grow.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Kristi: The Hair & Make up Box specializes in hair and makeup and styling for brides and their bridal parties throughout San Diego and Temecula. The two of us also work with several conventional clients in need of hair and make up for maternity, engagement, and commercial purposes. I also offer individual and group make up lessons.

Stacey: We’re both inspired by bohemian and minimalist trends. Together we’re known for creating our clients dream look. The connection that we have really sets us apart from others in the industry. We create our brides’ preview look at the same time and find this is the best way to see everything clearly and make any necessary tweaks. It is also the most efficient timing for our brides.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Kristi: I feel like San Diego is one of the capitols of the wedding industry as well as tourism. Approx. 35 % of our business comes from non-San Diego residents for weddings, conventions, corporate events, and social entertainment. We especially recommend being in San Diego if you would like to find success in the wedding industry.

Stacey: A local wedding photographer we’ve worked with said San Diego is second only to Vegas for number of weddings annually. There is no shortage of work in the wedding industry here and we are constantly referring brides to other artists if we are already booked.
