Meet Kyla Seabrook of DJ Kylita

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyla Seabrook.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kyla. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I’ve always been a music lover… in major part due to my parent’s love for music. At age five, I used to sing Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” around the house after hearing it played at the Rose Bowl when parents took me to see the fireworks. Age seven my parents took me to my first concert, the Long Beach Blues Festival where I was lucky enough to see James Brown perform. Age eight I went to the local record store with my dad and bought my first cassette tape with the allowance money I earned, and age nine I purchased my first CD.

In 2012, I found a record player on sale and bought it, knowing my dad had some records he no longer listened to. That was how I started my record collection… which quickly grew after I discovered how fun it was to go to the record store and take a chance on stuff in the $3 bin. I created an Instagram account in 2017 where I posted creative photos of records from my growing collection. My Instagram account was a creative outlet for me, but soon enough DJ’s in San Diego started to follow.

I was then invited to play my records at a local record store for shop patrons, and despite the fact that I had never used a mixer before, I said yes and played my music for an hour with the help of DJ Pokkey. My music resonated with the guests, and there I learned how to operate a mixer and two turntables for the first time. My nervousness may have shown but the excitement I felt and the confidence in my music sale and in no time, opportunities to DJ started rolling in.

In the short amount of time I’ve been DJing, I’ve had the opportunity to play records at bars all over San Diego and Tijuana, record shows, New Year’s Eve and company holiday parties, record store grand openings, a private house party, and even a wedding.

I’ve also been interviewed on local podcasts and radio shows which helped spread the word about the San Diego Vinyl MeetUp, a monthly listening party I coordinate and host, for record collectors to meet new people and share songs from their collections. The meetups are meant to bring people together who appreciate music on vinyl format, and share what they know about the artists, song meanings, or even the album artwork.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve made lots of friends and experienced nothing but support from the DJ community in San Diego since I started. They’ve helped me to learn how to beat match on vinyl, given me, tips on how to construct a set invited me to play my music, and shown me where to dig for good records. I’m grateful to have their help and friendship,

It hasn’t been easy as I’ve also had to practice and learn a lot on my own… how to set up and use the different equipment at each venue I play at, and how to overcome the nervousness that comes along with playing in front of a huge group of people when you’re first starting.

I’m going at my own pace, though, and love the excitement of playing for my records for an audience. I always say YES to an opportunity to share the music I love and look forward to seeing where this all leads me in the future!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the DJ Kylita story. Tell us more about the business.
I think what gets me noticed is my enthusiasm for both the music I play and for the opportunity to share it! I really love playing my records for people, and I know it comes across. Not a lot of Dj’s out there play strictly vinyl anymore, so I believe my love for groovy records sets me apart.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
So far I’ve had very good luck! I never intended to become a DJ, but I was lucky enough to meet the right people and discovered that DJing is what I should be doing, considering my passion for music! I think if you do what you love, you’ll have more opportunities to do what you love!
