Meet Lacey Mayer and Breanne Acio of SD Campervans in Morena Blvd

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lacey Mayer and Breanne Acio.

Lacey and Breanne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Lacey and I (Breanne) started building our first campervan in March of 2017. We were both teachers, so we set out to finish by May in order to take an extended road trip for our summer vacation. By May we built a beautiful home on wheels, with a full kitchen, solar, power, toilet, and a converting dinette/bed. During the two months on the road, we completely fell in love with the lifestyle and the huge community of like-minded people who were doing exactly what we were. The next year returning to school, turned out to be our last. In November, my stepdad lost his job, and at the age of 61, he and my mom were devastated with no hope of him finding a new one. Not wanting my parent to suffer, we decided to pool together our resources and “flip” a van. We ended up buying a van, he built it in 1 month and put it up for sale. Because Lacey and I had a following on Instagram, we had dozens of people reaching out to us and it sold right away and repeated the process with the profit.

After a couple of vans, we were getting a ton of requests asking us to build a van that the customer already owned because our style and price point couldn’t be found anywhere else. At the time, campervan conversions generally started at around $60k, not including the van, so it was very difficult for the average person to enter the market. Because we started this business with limited resources and a passion to make vanlife more accessible, we decided we wanted to disrupt the market and offer an affordable campervan conversion that felt like a luxury home, and that’s what we did. We opened our first warehouse in San Diego in March of 2018, and one year later, we now build three homes on wheels a month with our small, but passionate team. We are proudly the only female owned and operated campervan up-fitting company and we specializing in building quality, affordable homes on wheels.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Hahaha. The past year has been anything but a smooth road. We are a mission-driven company with limited resources and strong values. Since we want to make vanlife more accessible to more people, our profit model is based on volume. We’ve gone from building one van every two months to 3 vans every month and it has taken blood, sweat, tears, and not enough time off to get there. We have built our team slowly, but every person with us has internalized our mission as their own, and because we are all so passionate, we have been able to build SD Campervans to what it is in just over a year.

SD Campervans – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At SD Campervans, we build the home you want for the adventure you need. We help to empower people to live their dreams by showing them that it is possible. Both in the lifestyle, we promote and in the price we offer. We are proudly the only female owned and operated campervan up-fitting company in the United States, giving our designs a unique experience. We are also on a mission to make vanlife more accessible to more people by offering quality, affordable homes on wheels for whatever needs you or your family have.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
It’s difficult to think of the proudest moment of our careers because we are always focused on getting better, building faster, and improving our product. Looking back, we are most proud of the fact that we decided to take a chance on building a better life for ourselves in business and in vanlife. Rather than playing it safe, we chose to take a big risk pursuing something that both of us are very passionate about.

  • A complete upfit with SD Campervans starts at only $18k, including a kitchen, solar, power, bed, and storage.
