Meet Laura Bueno of Playground Players Productions/Edudance-Classrooms in Motion

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Bueno.

Laura, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Back in 2013, the school where I taught music wanted me to direct a children’s musical for the third grade in addition to providing two concerts a year for the younger grades. After accomplishing this task, which I had done previously at other schools, they asked me to return to provide an afterschool theater program. Because I needed insurance and a business name, Playground Players Productions came into existence. We have now provided fully-staged musical theater productions in several San Diego schools over the past 5 years, including working with the Coronado Arts Education Foundation.

As of January 2018, I acquired the ballroom dance company Edudance-Classrooms in Motion, where we provide ballroom dance lessons to elementary and middle school-aged children in public, private, and home schools. I had previously been an instructor for Edudance for 12 years and have since combined both companies to provide music, dance, and theater to children in San Diego County.

We also provide summer camps with our first one starting July 16th! Children ages 6-18 will receive intensive instruction in acting, singing, and dance while working on staging Beauty and the Beast. The online form to sign up is

I hold a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Has it been a smooth road?
The business has pretty much been growing steadily. I’ve been fortunate to be able to sing professionally with the San Diego Opera, San Diego Musical Theater, and other wonderful San Diego-based companies while being able to grow my businesses.

Like any new business, there can be growing pains! Finding good assistants, figuring out what the fees should be, what my overhead is, etc. can all be obstacles to achieving the success you’d like. But, I’d have to say things are going great and the future looks bright!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Playground Players Productions/Edudance-Classrooms in Motion – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The Edudance business is known for providing excellent ballroom dance instruction for the past 13 years and providing an art form to which most students probably wouldn’t be exposed. Children learn etiquette while gaining a knowledge of different cultures through dance. I am most proud to say that most schools invite us back year after year!

Playground Players specializes in providing a fun environment where children are able to learn all aspects of theater, build friendships, and gain an appreciation for live performances. I am most proud of the final productions and seeing how the children gain a sense of accomplishment when they perform.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The thing I like the most about San Diego is the fact that there are so many different suburbs! I have the opportunity to run my programs all over the county to so many different children. It truly is a learning experience for me when I get to teach a child who has never seen a live production vs. a child who has seen several shows on Broadway. I teach so many children with different levels of theatrical exposure. It keeps me on my toes!

The thing I like the least is probably the traffic. Since I drive all over the county, I encounter a lot!
