Meet Laura Swan of Laura J. Swan International in North County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Swan.

Laura, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I knew it was my destiny to work in the field of women’s empowerment ever since I was 16 years old. As a young girl, my family unit fell apart, and I was raised by my father from age 8 on without a strong feminine presence in my life.

This left a deep hole in my heart that was hungry for connection, and I struggled for many years trying to fill this with anything I could. I had a drug and alcohol addiction by age 11 and turned to boys and outward attention to help me fill the void inside. By age 13 I was partying like an adult, and taking very poor care of my body. By age 14 I faced a cancer scare that shook me to the core, and I knew I had to make changes if I wanted to turn my life around.

So I did just that. By age 15, I began to study and learn all about health, self-esteem, and spirituality and started making healthier and more empowering choices. I knew I wanted to make a difference in the world with my life, so I began teaching, leading, and sharing with others from a very young age what I was learning.

By age 16, I knew my greatest hunger was to connect with other young women and bring them together to support and empower each other, so I started leading women’s circles and started the Women’s Advocacy Organization at my high school. I began organizing “Discovery Workshops” that taught about mindset, meditation, consciousness, and yoga to teenagers before they left high school.

Over the years I continued to experience a lot of hardships and personal challenges, such as an eating disorder in college followed by a number of different health and fertility challenges. I had several lost pregnancies and thought I would never be able to have children again. But even so, from a very young age, I was certain I wanted to help empower and uplift women and girls.

I knew if I could rise from the pain and hardships I had experienced, I could help other women to do the same. And I saw what magic and miracles happened every time I held a women’s circle or event, it was like medicine for our souls. I also always knew deep in my heart that women’s wisdom and leadership were desperately needed on the planet, and I wanted to help as many women as possible to wake up to their gifts and feel confident to fully share them with the world.

Though I still always had my own healing journey and a lot of personal work to do on myself over the years, my professional life has always been filled with all different ways I worked in the field of women’s healing, empowerment, and leadership cultivation. In time, I became certified as a yoga teacher, an energy healer, and a Holistic Life Coach, as well as I received my Masters in Counseling Psychology and trained as a psychotherapist.

I have been leading women’s healing retreats for the past 11 years, and have been doing workshops and circles for over 18 years. Five years ago, I started my current business: Laura J. Swan International, as a Women’s Transformational Coach, and I now work one on one with women from all over the world, and have both local and online programs and courses that women can join from anywhere. I continue to lead retreats in Hawaii and locally in San Diego area, and also host a Mastermind group one to two times a year to help empower women, entrepreneurs, to find their authentic gifts and bring them forth in the world.

I am run my business almost entirely from home, and am now a mother of two amazing, healthy children, and live with my husband in beautiful Encinitas. I trust that miracle healing is possible and dreams can come true because my own life has taught me this, even with the many bumps along the way.

I started my business and became determined to help other women because I believe it is our hardships and painful experiences that eventually give birth to our greatest gifts. My greatest passion is helping women and girls to overcome the pain of the past, and any disempowering beliefs about themselves, so that they can step into their true calling.

The Feminine has so much to give to this world. We need empowered women to be compassionate, heart-centered leaders, teachers, and healers like never before in human history. My purpose is to help amplify this power within women so that they feel confident to use their heart-centered superpowers to truly heal themselves… and help change the world.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Has it been smooth? Well… I would not say always smooth, but there have been times of ease and grace as well as challenge and struggle. I had times of barely making ends meet in those first years, and was very much struggling to make it here in the San Diego area because it is not always an easy place to survive and thrive in business. Especially in a market that is somewhat saturated in the healing arts.

I did not have the best business or marketing skills for the first several years I was leading retreats, workshops and circles. I just assumed you advertised with a few fliers and everyone would show up!! I much more preferred to focus on my art and serving people, and the business side was not my strength. But, I have learned so much over the years about what it really takes to keep a business thriving, and how to have a greater impact, which is what I care about above all.

In more recent times my challenge has been balancing motherhood with being an entrepreneur and growing my business. At times, it seems almost impossible to do both… like when my children both come down with the flu and they need me close. I may have deadlines or events or speaking engagements that very same week. It has been very hard at times letting go of business opportunities or canceling events when I feel I need to be home with my kids. But being a present and devoted mother is above all my first commitment and priority.

So, in the end, I come back to my faith and trust that opportunities will always come back around, and my most important priority is my family no matter what. And also no matter what, I have always felt guided by a higher power and spiritual strength inside myself that is always there. So even in the times that running a business has been challenging and I’m not sure how it’s going to work out or how in the world to balance it all, I have always found strength in my faith.

I trust in my own inner guidance system to help get me through and eventually find the path forward, and that I am never alone figuring it all out.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Laura J. Swan International – what should we know?
I probably shared much of this in the first question sharing my story. I specialize in Women’s Transformational Coaching and Leadership Training. I help women to become the most radiant, empowered version of themselves so they can create the life they desire and step into their true calling. I like to ask the women I work with what they feel is different about working with me.

What I have been told most sets me apart is my authenticity and vulnerability as a leader and a coach. I don’t pretend to be light years ahead of anyone else, I know that we all have struggles and come back to meet our own shadows over and over again. I share my own struggles AND successes openly, from motherhood to my business to health to my marriage. We are all human. I aim to help women stay in their hearts and remember the truth of who they are, even in the midst of these inevitable challenges that arise. And I try to lead by example most of all.

I am also told that women feel safe to be themselves, safe to explore both their darkness and their light and that my programs and coaching sessions provide a safe container for them to actually grow and find their authentic power inside. They also feel safe knowing I have traveled to the darkest places in myself and I still came out alive!! I’m sure that gives them hope and comfort to know this.

I am most proud of the fact that I have continued to stay true to my vision and my heart, even if that meant growing a little more slowly. There are a lot of marketing strategies out there that have subtle to overt manipulation tactics and I personally don’t believe this is the way feminine entrepreneurs will really thrive doing what we love. I focus on providing the best service possible to my clients and students, and most of my business comes from referrals and people who have been following me and my work for years.

I have made a decent living without needing to grow my email list to gazillions or use any marketing tactics I don’t feel comfortable with, and I believe it’s because I provide authentic offerings and do my best to provide healing and impactful experiences above all else.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
You know… let’s take this way back! My 10th grade English teacher Mrs. Copt was a huge supporter of my dreams and visions as a teenager, and she saw something special in me and helped to bring it out. So did my journalism teacher Mrs. Nelson. These teachers were my cheerleaders and trusted me to do some very crazy ideas back then in high school, and I will forever be in gratitude to them for allowing me to be who I was. They set me on a path to success as a woman entrepreneur from very early on!!

I also had a mentor come into my life about age 23 who changed the direction of my career and personal life forever. Her name is Dr. Anita Johnston, and she is an author, psychologist, and healer who works with women internationally. She showed me what was possible to build a business and career working with women that is authentic to my soul, and I saw her continue to become more and more successful innovating and finding new ways to serve women and have a greater impact. She also helped me find my graduate school and the path of study that was most aligned with my dreams. I owe her so much thanks!!

Lastly, my husband has been an incredible mentor for me in helping me bring some masculine structure into my feminine business. He has a lot of experience with online marketing and knowing how to help people become successful in selling their products and services online. I have learned so much from his wisdom and support in how to grow my business from just a local one to an international one (now if only I could implement ALL of it!!). One day at a time… 🙂

And so many many more!!
