Meet Lauren Hitchcock and Ryan Tracy of Shelter Residential

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Hitchcock and Ryan Tracy.

Lauren and Ryan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Ryan and I met while working for different (actually competing) real estate companies – he was managing acquisitions, and I managed construction/design. We were both frustrated with the lack of quality and design in our industry, so after a year of dating, we decided to take the leap and start our own company. We purchased our first project together in 2014 and have been doing it ever since!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s smooth in that we work really well together, which some people don’t get at all! Most people can’t comprehend working full time with their partner, but for us, it’s pretty easy.

Our biggest initial challenge was securing start-up capital, which was no easy feat after the recession when lending was extremely tight. We also struggle with an ever-changing real estate and economic environment, which heavily influences our business. We’re constantly trying to predict the future in an effort to make smart decisions.

Shelter Residential – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Shelter is a design/build company that focuses on flipping houses in San Diego County.

We tend to seek out unique projects with character, or something that makes them special. We hope we’re known for good design and high-quality construction because that is our ultimate goal!

We’re most proud of how our company has evolved – we’ve taken more design risks in recent years and we think it’s worked in our favor. We’re also incredibly proud of our contractors and the team we’ve put together to tackle our projects. They take our dreams and turn them into reality!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For us, success is enjoying what we do and creating value and profit while doing it. It’s the most rewarding feeling knowing your bills have been paid doing what you truly love, and the bonus is it never feels like work!
