Meet Lawrence Chou of MGX Copy in Miramar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lawrence Chou.

Lawrence, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
7 years ago, I needed to get something printed. So, I did what most people do, which is go to my local print shop.

Unfortunately, as a non-print professional at the time, I didn’t know how to set up my files, I didn’t know what the terminology was, I didn’t know what type of paper to choose, and I didn’t realize that every one of these misunderstandings would lead to hidden charges.

Long story short, what should have been an exciting opportunity of seeing something go from a digital file to a physical product turned into a bad experience of headaches and misunderstandings.

Going home that day, I felt strongly that if there was a website that had upfront instant pricing, as well as customer service representatives who were focused on explaining the printing process, the printing industry could really be different. And that’s how MGX Copy was born.

Since then, we have grown to over 60+ employees, served over 30,000+ customers, have production facilities in both San Diego and New Jersey, run the nation’s largest fleet of Ricoh c9110 production presses, and we have the nation’s highest satisfaction rating of any printing company in the United States our size or larger. We were listed on the Inc 5000 of fastest growing companies in the United States in 2015 and 2016.

Has it been a smooth road?
I don’t think any small business owner has a smooth road to getting up to speed. The most difficult part is probably the requirement that everyone wears a lot of hats. And just when you think you’ve worn all the hats, you find out there more hats keep coming!

Probably, one of our biggest struggles along the way was really learning how to figure out what customers really wanted. Just saying “service with a smile” does not equal great customer service. Great customer service is not only providing “service with a smile”, but also really taking the time to understand what a customer’s needs are so that our team can make customers truly happy.

We’re dedicated to asking the right questions, as well as providing guidance when we feel like we can make things better.
