Meet Leah Singer and Jessica Abu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Singer and Jessica Abu.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Leah and Jessica. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As my mother became sick, she gifted me some of her jewelry, which I put away. One day, I was thinking about a favorite jewelry shopping trip we took, so I pulled out the box of jewelry she had given me. As I was looking through the pieces, I imagined repurposing them, making them more modern and wearable.

Over coffee one day, I ran my idea past Jessica who suggested that we visit the jewelry building in downtown San Diego together. While there, we met with Jessica’s husband, a wholesale diamond dealer, who helped guide my vision. Using diamonds from one of my mother’s rings, I designed three 14k bangle bracelets. To make them even more special, I cut out letters corresponding to my children’s first names. The finished pieces were gorgeous!

Having gone through the process with me, Jessica and I thought that others would love similar jewelry. We decided to go for it, and LeahJessica Jewelry was born. Our first collection was 14k hand cut name earrings. We initially started selling amongst our friends and family, who loved them!

Being moms, we knew that there was a niche with parents, as gifts for a new mom, grandparents, a baby’s first earring set or just because gifts. We only use the finest materials and our pieces are designed to be worn with other jewelry. Since launching our first collection in 2015, we have added many other styles, with a focus on personalization.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The journey for Jessica and I certainly had its twists and turns! The most difficult challenge for us was how to take the concept of a jewelry company that specialized in repurposed and personalized pieces and makes it a reality. We were fortunate to have the help of family and friends along the way to guide us around business development and to connect us with collaborators.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
Jessica – I was born and raised in San Diego, California. I have been blessed with an amazing family. My parents, who both immigrated from Mexico, set the bar high for me and my two younger siblings. My father’s strong work ethic taught me to be a hard worker and a fighter while my mother’s nurture and love trained me to be patient and loving. They have motivated me to become the strong woman that I am today.

Having a strong entrepreneurial spirit, I have always enjoyed starting new ventures. I have been part of the retail world since a very young age. At the age of 24, I opened my first business, a boutique named Amor Lingerie, shortly after I opened a second location. I later fell in love and got married, I now have three beautiful children. This did not slow me down, I started a home business selling jeans and athletic clothes from home. After meeting Leah, we both had a great vision and we decided to start a line of personalized jewelry. I enjoy using my creative energy to enrich people with a little piece of my heart. Seeing how happy our clients are when they wear one of our designs brings me an abundance of joy. Leah and I make a great team and look forward to taking our brand to the next level.

Leah – I was born in Ann Arbor, MI and grew up in El Paso, TX. Living in El Paso allowed me to maintain close contact with our family in Mexico, where my father is from. I was, and still am, the social butterfly of the family. After high school, I went to the University of Texas, San Antonio, where I graduated with a degree in Spanish and a minor in Communication. After graduation, I moved to San Diego, got married and have three amazing children.

From a young age, I knew I wanted to work in a creative field. School was a struggle for me, and it was in the creative process that I was really able to develop my strengths. I’ve always loved everything having to do with fashion. I remember making collages with pictures cut out of fashion magazines. I also loved going to local thrift stores, purchasing old Levi’s and customizing them at home. And I was the queen of making bead bracelets.

Sadly in 2017, my mother, with whom I was very close, passed away. I knew I needed to continue my creativeness and keep designing new pieces. She was my inspiration and always encouraged me to reach for my dreams. Our love of jewelry brought us really close together. She taught me the true joy of designing wearable jewelry.
