Meet Lesa of The MIX Technique®

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lesa.

Lesa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My mom put me into dance classes at the age of two. She had always wanted to dance, so she started me in dance lessons to give me something to do. Little did she know I would become obsessed with it and want to do it for the rest of my life! My first studio was in New York and I still remember being on the stage at recital. It was such a rush and to this day, I love a live performance. I went on to perform on my studios dance teams and compete for years. My first teaching job was subbing at a studio where I trained in San Diego during my junior year in high school.

Deciding to go for it and major in Dance, I transferred to the University of California, San Diego. Before my first semester began, I was accepted into The Ailey School’s Summer Intensive program in New York. It was the most amazing experience and to this day I am eternally grateful.

While finishing up my B.A. in Dance, I also pursued my Certification in Personal Training and went through Yoga Teacher Training. I also created my business LMG Dance and Fitness, now doing business as The MIX Technique®.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My journey has not been easy but that is what makes it so special to me. I think if your journey has been smooth all of your life, you might be taking the easy route. I’ve always had this annoying part of me that wants to experience the thing which seems the most challenging because I see it as true growth and strength. I say ‘annoying’ because of course, it’s easier to stay away from challenges, growth and learning and just sit on the couch but how boring! I have so many stories just from living life and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.

Through perseverance and hard work, my company receives contracts for choreography, dance workshops/intensives and group/private sessions. The MIX Technique® class (a lovely blend of yoga, Ballet basics, barre workouts, cardio and Horton Modern Technique can be taken on Fridays at 5:30pm at Culture Shock Dance Center.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The MIX Technique® – what should we know?
I started my company in 2003 and was performing a lot of personal training with private clients, dance classes with private clients and yoga private sessions. I would drive with my fitness equipment in my car and loved it. Once driving to all of my clients became more difficult, I opened a brick and mortar. In 2009, MIX was born and one of my childhood dreams came true: A studio where students of all shapes, sizes, colors and ages could dance and train together. My studio was a dance, fitness and yoga studio. In 2013, after property management went through changes, my studio closed. It was a huge heartbreak but a good friend reminded me of this important point: My business is me. The classes I’ve created, the personality behind my brand…My clients come to me because they trust me. And that honestly helped me to keep the class format I created specifically for the studio (The MIX Technique®) to continue.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I’m very grateful to my clientele who trust me and continue to train with me. And my mom, for everything. Shouts out to my people who constantly cheer me on and believe in me, too. Thank you.
