Meet Linda Mariano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Linda Mariano.

Linda, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Art San Diego is San Diego’s only contemporary fine art show and has become one of the leading cultural events in Southern California. Since its inception in 2009, Art San Diego has enriched the city with the compelling, site- and theme-specific art projects; art talks and panel discussions; dynamic and cutting-edge film, video, and new media works; and a curated selection of emerging and spotlight artists.

Currently, Art San Diego is still the county’s premier contemporary fine art fair, owned and operated by Redwood Media Group and sponsored by UBS Financial Services. Art San Diego 2019 received rave reviews for its venue debut Oct. 10 – 13 at the San Diego Convention Center. The 11th annual show welcomed a 35 percent increase in attendance and drew praise from artists, collectors and guests, proving the move from the Wyland Center at the Del Mar Fairgrounds to Downtown San Diego was a hit.

Art San Diego 2019 offered aficionados and novice collectors alike an unparalleled opportunity to explore, experience, experiment, and discover art, artists, and their own creativity at the fair which featured more than 85 galleries, art publishers and artists from seven countries and 60 cities across the globe. The showcase offered a wide range of art mediums including original prints, paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography, ceramics, giclees, lithographs, and glassworks, among other contemporary and fine art.

Art San Diego’s dynamic programming includes Art Labs, Art Talks, the [LOCAL TALENT] and Spotlight Artist Programs, and the San Diego Art Prize. Through partnerships with the San Diego visual arts community, Art San Diego provides opportunities and a focus on San Diego’s vibrant and diverse cultural art scene alongside an exciting collection of international artists and galleries.

It is our hope that the art fair acts as a catalyst to encourage and promote the collecting of investment-grade art, and enhances the city’s reputation as a leading cultural destination.

Has it been a smooth road?
Art San Diego was founded in 2009 by Ann Berchtold, a San Diego based curator and arts program developer. To build the fair and grow its recognition beyond a local radius, it was acquired by Redwood Media Group in 2014. Redwood Media Group has been in business since 2009 as one of the country’s premier art fair developers and producers, revolutionizing the global fine art community by helping artists and gallery owners grow their businesses through fine art exhibitions and publications, art business education, mentoring, marketing, and social media. Today, RMG owns and operates six fine art shows: Artexpo New York, Spectrum Miami, Red Dot Miami, Art Santa Fe, Art Dallas, and, of course, Art San Diego.

The art fair business is always challenging and dynamic. Exhibitors ebb and flow, art sales go up and down, but in today’s art world, art fairs are recognized as a core of the industry. Each of Redwood’s fairs have their own personality and place in the community. We believe in the importance of being part of the community and establishing relationships that live year-round, not just for the weeks and days leading to the fair. With our presenting sponsor, UBS Financial Services, we have worked to build those relationships. Many of our partners have supported and participated in Art San Diego for multiple years.

We believe this is the way to build an art fair that has an impact and gives back to the community, while at the same time builds a profitable entity for the company.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Art San Diego produced by Redwood Media Group – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
At Redwood Media Group, we’re passionate about helping artists, gallery owners and publishers to succeed. In today’s changing marketplace, it takes a combination of talent, drive, networking, and marketing to thrive. That’s where we come in. Bringing artists and industry professionals together is what we do best! We bring them more exposure and help so they can grow their business through fine art exhibitions, art business education, fine art publications, fine art mentoring, marketing, social media, and more.

At RMG, we pride ourselves on the relationship we have with our business partners and exhibitors. We strive to follow four key objectives:

1. Be a service-oriented company with helpful, caring employees who are experienced in exhibitor relations and customer service

2. Create an attendee experience that goes beyond traditional expectations

3. Build marketing plans that support the success of the event as well as the community with an emphasis on social media, content management, print and electronic media, community outreach and public relations

4. Build strong relationships with exhibitors by communicating regularly, listening objectively, defining clear initiatives, and measuring progress

We believe, and our exhibitors and partners have confirmed, these objectives differentiate RMG and sets us apart in our industry.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We love San Diego. We like the vibrancy of the city, the enthusiasm of the people, the responsiveness of the city offices, the location of the Convention Center. It has all the elements we believe we need to build a successful art fair.
