Meet Lindsey McPherson of Carefree Companions Pet Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey McPherson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Ever since I was little, I have loved animals and have been drawn to them. Before I got my first dog I found a well-used 4 foot leash on the ground somewhere. I picked it up and brought it home with me. I would walk around the yard carrying it, imagining what it would be like to have a dog at the other end. I was always asked if I wanted to be a veterinarian when I grew up, and I knew that I did not want to do that! I wanted to be the person they were excited to see. I just didn’t know exactly how that would come to be.

Fresh out of high school, I started working at a natural pet food and treat company in Encinitas called Tigertail Foods which combined two of my favorite things; pet care and baking. A couple years in to that I read about a local college offering a course called “The Pet Sitting University” where you could learn how to start your own pet sitting company. It was a two-day course that gave you the basics. From there I officially started Carefree Companions Pet Care at the end of 2004 as an overnight pet sitting company so I could still do my day job, which I also loved. Tigertail Foods is what planted the seed of natural pet care that I continue to learn about and follow today.

In April of 2017, I learned that Tigertail Foods would be sold, and I decided to leave my position there after almost 15 years to go full time with my pet sitting business. I now offer full service pet care including dog walking, daily visits, extended visits, overnight care and 24 hour care. My business is insured, bonded, pet first aid certified and city licensed and I have many clients who are happy with my new daytime availability!

Most recently, I have added a partnership with a local business that makes CBD FECO oil for pets called Happy Dog Cannameds, which stemmed from a need I had for my own 15 year old lab pit mix with arthritis. Their line of dog products is new, but their company has been making CBD products for 30 years and it has done amazing things for Toby. It has kept him off of prescription pain pills which is wonderful because I prefer to stay natural as much as possible. If I can help more pets stay happy and healthy I’m excited to do so.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been mostly smooth sailing, with many, many learning opportunities! I have always been a shy person who would not speak up for herself. In owning and operating my own company I had to overcome those fears so that I could meet with new clients confidently and get all the important information I needed to best care for their pets and home. I have been so lucky to have really wonderful clients – very seldom have I had any issues with clients for any reason but when it has happened I always tried to learn how to better myself from it to help avoid it in the future. My biggest obstacle has been myself, and it didn’t come easy but I have pushed through my fears and I am a better person for it today.

Please tell us about Carefree Companions Pet Care.
Carefree Companions Pet Care was started in 2004 and since then I have had the opportunity to work with many other pet related businesses including veterinarians, trainers and other pet sitters who I have learned much from which helps me be the best caretaker that I can. I have taken the time to learn about many different dog and cat training techniques and body language. I have learned about different illnesses in dogs and cats and how to identify them and know when a situation can be taken care of at home or if it really requires a vet visit.

I specialize in dog and cat care because those are the two pets I see most commonly, but have taken care of horses, reptiles, birds, rabbits and fish as well. In high school I took horseback riding lessons and love horses but there aren’t a lot of horse sitting opportunities as most board at a stable!

I pride myself on my excellent reputation for being reliable, honest and having extensive experience in a variety of pet care topics including nutrition and natural pet care. Many of my clients come to me for advice once they get to know me as they respect my opinion. I have, on more than one occasion, mentioned something that I noticed that was off about a pet and suggested they have it checked out only to find out that what I thought was going on was right and an illness was caught early. Most of all I love what I do and it shows in how I do it!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I have come to understand what the saying “begin as you mean to go along” means and if I could start over I would stick to my guns and not make exceptions to my own policies because it’s hard to go back from something once you’ve agreed to it once. You can’t run a successful business when you don’t have a solid foundation or are giving too much away.
