Meet Linh Du of Chan Dong Supermarket in National City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Linh Du.

Linh, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We opened our doors in 1989. We have been the local grocery store in the area for almost 30 years now. We specialize in Asian groceries from the Philippines, Thailand, China, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea. Our specialties include a wide variety of teas and health food. One of our major sellers is hot sticky corn from Thailand that we boil fresh on the premises. It’s always hot all day long. Other specialties include house-made banana bread, garlic peanuts, boiled peanuts. On Fridays, we also have many Filipino specialties like various rice cakes and tamales.

We really try to cater to our customers and give them what they want. We have to adjust with the times and realize that the consumer palate now is very complex. We are also very involved with the local community and contribute and support multiple nonprofit organizations. We are fortunate to see the evolvement of National City welcome all the different cultures that reside in the area.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth path because there is a lot of competition with the big grocery stores in the area. We have been able to compete only because we bring more specialized products to the table. We keep prices low because of our low overhead.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Chan Dong Supermarket – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that our city is so big and diverse. It’s a big melting pot of different cultures that coincide and feed off each other. There is also no doubt that we have the best weather and the best scenery. You can go tot he mountains, desert, and beach all within about only 20 mins.
