Meet Lisa Lee of Perfectly Preserved USA in El Cajon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Lee.

Lisa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Several years ago, I was visiting my Aunt in England, and she was teaching me how to make salted caramel (because who doesn’t love caramel??). I had been a single mom for a while and was looking for ways to supplement my income in order to provide a better life for my son. Our session in the kitchen quickly turned into brainstorming ways I could build on the business she had built in the UK and put my own spin on it. Since then, I have been hustling to obtain the proper licensing, create my own menu and build up my own customer base. It’s taken a lot of long nights and hard work but I am proud to have come so far in a few short years, and I love being able to show my son what one person is capable of.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think building your own business is ever a smooth process. I had never navigated the food industry before and had no idea how to go about getting the inspections, permits, and licensing I would need. My first set of paperwork was destroyed after weeks of work when my son dropped a full cup of water on it. I went back for a second set and submitted some of the required documents in the wrong way, causing me to have to fix my mistakes and resubmit. I’ve also paid for events and not made my money back, learning along the way what my niche really is. And I have had some laughable mistakes in the kitchen! From dropping jars to burning cookies, to recipes that turned out horrendous. I try to take it all in as part of the learning process. I love what I do, so the errors along the way don’t tend to slow me down much.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Perfectly Preserved USA – what should we know?
Perfectly Preserved specializes in a wide range of jams, confections, and baked goods. I make over 40 different flavors of jam and 25 different foods. I have traditional flavors like strawberry and out-of-the-ordinary ones like blackberry peach and pineapple. I’d like to think I’m known for creative, high quality, homemade products. I love making gift baskets with various products in them so that my customers can experience a variety of my recipes. And I can get my orders filled quickly, so if you need something in a pinch you know who to ask.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being genuine! I find that things turn out for the best when I am just being myself. I am not a natural salesperson so I stay away from that type of environment as much as possible. I like to interact with people naturally, and I like creating recipes that are simple and natural.
