Meet Lisa McKenna of Tru Lifestyle in La Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa McKenna.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Lisa. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
For as long as I can remember, my passion has always been in the Holistic Health Field. I believe it started as a child. My mom worked in a health food store and on occasion I would spend the day at work with her. Eating the healthy snacks, running around the isles. I still love the smell when you first walk into a health food store.

For most of my life, I have suffered with allergies. As a young child, it was your typical hay fever symptoms. As I grew older, those symptoms moved deeper into a constant feeling of lethargy and an inability to really focus and concentrate. As time progressed, these symptoms morphed into migraine headaches, acne, and anxiety.

While I had a deep passion for the alternative health field. I know that my choice to make it my career was to search and find my way to my greatest health and wellness! After High School, I completed my 500hr. Massage Therapy Training at Bio-Link Therapeutic Massage Institute, in Tempe, AZ in 1995.

Becoming a massage therapist initially was, in my plan, a way to be in the health field and make a living while at school. Here I am, 23 years later, practicing massage and still loving it! Being a massage therapist has lead me to so many amazing opportunities for work, travel, healing, growth and connecting with really wonderful souls.

In my early twenties, I began working at A Desert Song Healing Arts Center, in Phoenix, AZ, as a massage therapist. Little did I know that this job would lead me to meet my mentors and teachers that would catapult me into my life’s work! It was here that I took my first yoga class and I honestly CAN’T say it was love at first Down Dog.

My body was tight and twisted up, and the poses were NOT EASY for me. Still, I was drawn to it. Something about it felt right to me, despite the challenge. Wanting to learn more, I completed 200Hr. Teacher training through A Desert Song Healing Arts Center in 2001. I began teaching immediately at the studio and continued practicing massage therapy as well. I was young and eager, and I taught anything and everything they would let me get my hands on.

Gentle yoga, prenatal, mommy and my workshops, all levels classes, assisting intro to yoga series. It was through A Desert Song that I was introduced to Yoga retreats. I assisted many of the retreats they hosted. I studied with international yoga teachers that hosted workshops. I studied with my own teachers on a regular basis. I was beginning to feel a change in my body, mind, heart, and spirit.

Fast-forward to today, 17 years later, my body has completely changed. I would say I am healthier now at 42 than I ever was at 22! Yoga has given me so much, and it gives me so much joy to be able to share the practice and teachings with students. Next to Yoga, nutrition is my passion!!

While I was happy and loved being a part of the Desert Song Team, I knew that I needed a change. I moved up to Northern California and studied holistic nutrition at Bauman College. I became a Certified Holistic Nutritionist in 2004. Discovering the best way to nourish my body has been my saving grace! Realizing that the majority of my allergies were from the foods I was eating on a regular basis. It was the next step in my own healing journey.

It was the final piece of the puzzle! Through proper nutrition, my migraines ceased, my skin cleared, my mind cleared, I felt the energy I didn’t know I could feel, and I felt ALIVE! My own journey to healing has lead me to create my business, Tru Lifestyle. Tru Lifestyle is about finding a healthy and balanced way of living that is Tru to YOU. We are all unique!

My goal is to combine my knowledge of holistic studies, yoga teachings, nutrition, and meditation to support people on their journey to improve their health, quality of life and connection to themselves.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never a smooth road. There have been many struggles, but it’s the struggles that have lead me to my greatest growth and deeper awareness of who I am.
