Meet Lizbeth Pastenes of City Heights Rotaract Club

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lizbeth Pastenes.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Rotaract is a service organization for young professionals ages 18-30 years of age. Our mission is “Providing opportunities for young professionals to address the physical and social needs of City Heights”. Our club was founded primarily by alumni of the Cardinals Interact Program (Hoover Interact Club), which is based in Hoover High School. It was special in that many of the members had a history together which revolved around Rotary, service above self, and and the community of City Heights.

We chartered in July of 2015 and have actively engaged in the community ever since. We aim to provide service opportunities as well as professional development and networking opportunities for our members. We have been extremely fortunate to have advisors and mentors that have played a vital role in the creation of our club; they deserve all the credit. Rotarians Marge Cole, Pamela Gutierrez and Beatriz Valencia have been our biggest supporters and helped create and shape us into the City Heights Rotaract Club.

The Price Philanthropies Foundation has provided us with grants and in-kind donations that have inspired us to continue to be active and grow. Our sponsoring clubs San Diego Rotary Club 33 and Mission Valley Sunset Rotary have both provided special guidance and unique opportunities for our club. And finally, our success is also due to the incredible members who attend our meetings, work hard during service events, and create a welcoming and fun environment which attracts new members.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Overall, it has been a smooth road, however, there is always room for improvement. We have been fortunate enough to have all around support from our sponsors. Like any other club, our ongoing goal is to continue to gain new members in order to sustain and grown our club. Starting and running a club brought up lots of questions, which helps us continue to learn new things every day.

One of our goals is to take ownership of a unique project created by our club for the benefit of our community. This has been a challenge due to the various organizations already making a difference in City Heights. However, we hope the next year brings new ideas to make this a reality.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a service organization that focuses on the community of City Heights. All of our members have a special connection to the community: either they grew up, went to school, or work here. It is important for our club that our members are well connected to the community we serve so that everyone feels committed and dedicated to giving back. City Heights is one of the most diverse communities in the country. This is what makes our club so diverse and sets us apart.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in City Heights, where I was surrounded by people from different parts of the world. I enjoyed seeing different cultures come together for the benefit of a community. Growing up, I always saw people serving their community and I knew that I wanted to do something similar in the future.

I used to be shy and reserved, but over the years I became more outgoing and started to take on more leadership roles. My interest in Rotaract started when I was in an Interact club at Hoover High School. This allowed me to see the importance in serving and giving back to my community.
