Meet Lorna Jenkins of My Learning Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorna Jenkins.

Hi Lorna, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I created My Learning Studio in 2006 as an Arts & Crafts and Science Studio; customers kept asking if we tutored, so we started that within a few months of opening, and it quickly morphed into an award-winning tutoring center.

We’ve been awarded Best in the Inland Empire for Tutoring Service with the Press Enterprise every year since opening; that’s 16 years in a row. Quite impressive when your one location is up against franchises (Sylvan & Kumon) with multiple locations.

Customers LOVE US; check out our reviews.

During the bad economy in 2008, I started the non-profit, My Learning Studio Outreach in 2008.

The turning point in my career was when I was accepted into Riverside’s Chamber of Commerce program, Leadership Riverside 2014. THAT was a pivotal point in my LIFE!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not. With my husband’s support mentally and financially, along with perseverance and my mom’s quote in my head, “You never do anything half-ass, do ya”

Occasionally, in the past 16 years, I’ve had some pretty unpredictable and entitled employees that really took me for a ride.

I’ve had a couple of customers that didn’t share their child’s disability with us and then we had our hands full.

Not having any formal education and owning two educational companies surprises most educators. I’m a serial Entrepreneur, and I didn’t do well in school. So, I want to help as many kids as I can to succeed and not struggle like I did.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I LOVE Kids. I love to see their faces when they finally get it. The relief on their parent’s face is priceless. This truly is #TheBestJobEVER

I work hard, really hard! I haven’t pulled a paycheck in more than 16 years. This is my passion.

I also Love Riverside. Explore Riverside Together was my group project for Leadership Riverside, however, we chose to produce TEDxRiverside instead.

Years afterward, I decided to use it as a fundraiser for MLSO, and last year during the pandemic, we had 1200 residents participate. This year our event in on Saturday, October 1st, and we’ll have FREE admission, tours, and activities for all to discover downtown Riverside. There are more than 15 tours, including the museums, fire & police department, historic courthouse, Mission Inn, and more.

MLS & MLSO offers all private 1-1 tutoring in-person and virtually at an affordable price. We also offer enrichment classes for students and adults, such as painting, STEM Science, history, etc. It’s a “Learning for Everyone”

Let me take a moment to talk about a couple of students that have been with us for a long time.

2017: Ryan started with us in the non-profit, and her mom was struggling. Her Mom has succeeded, and so has Ryan; she’s now in the 8th grade and still with us with a smiling face every day.

2014: Wyatt’s grandfather contacted me when his son was incarcerated, and he now had custody of his grandson, and he was struggling. He stayed with us throughout the years and I received a call from George at the end of the year last asking me what size picture did I want of Wyatt because he GRADUATED!!! He was choking back the tears as he thanked me for being there for them both. That he couldn’t have done it without me. It’s was a moment I’ll never forget #BestJobEver

2014: Lara comes in looking for help for her foster child and continues to come into this day; Candice is now a thriving freshman and loves learning! Again, #BestJobEver.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I’ve always wanted to franchise. The problem is, I’m a hands-on boss. I need to have someone that would like to come in and prepare it and run the franchises. I’m 60 and ready to retire or at least partially retire. I’ve discovered golf, and it’s calling me.

Pricing:

  • Private 1-1 tutoring starts at $44 an hour
  • Enrichment Classes as low as $15 an hour
