Today we’d like to introduce you to Lynn LaChapelle.
Lynn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My husband had always dreamed of being a wine maker and in 2007 we found a 30 acre parcel in the Highland Valley area, just proximate to the San Pasqual Agricultural Preserve. In 2008, we cleared the land after the Witch Creek fire devastated the citrus grove on the property. We began planting our first block in the spring of 2010 and have been planting between 1,500 to 3,000 vines for the past nine years. Early on we made the decision to focus on growing Rhone grape varietals as our climate was very similar to the region near Avignon, France and the cooler areas of Paso Robles, CA. We had our first estate harvest in 2013 and we opened our doors to the public in January 2015. We grow over 12 grape varietals on our estate: 6 white grape varietals and 6 red grape varietals. From these grapes, we produce 10 wines (a Rose, 4 white wines, a dessert wine and 5 red wines). We are committed to sustainable agriculture and vinify our wines in both innovative and traditional manners. We are passionate about wine and a visit to Domaine Artefact will be a great experience!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a de novo vineyard takes a great deal of hard work, commitment and financial resources. We both have full time jobs and have been building out the vineyard and developing Domaine Artefact from savings. We haven’t had much time off, and that is a challenge for sure. I don’t think we have had many couples vacations and when we do think about a vacation, we go wine tasting in Paso or back to southern France! We do live and breathe the vineyard and winery, it can be a little all-consuming at times.
Domaine Artefact Vineyard and Winery – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are an estate vineyard and boutique winery. We are known for producing premier wines from Rhone varietals. We are very proud that in the first year of releasing our estate wines we have received numerous international wine awards. We are excited about our wine journey and love introducing traditionally “red wine drinkers” to white wines and red wine blends.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Winning four medals from the Sunset International wine completion and winning three medals from the San Francisco International wine competition. We only entered our estate wines and every wine entered received a medal! Very cool for us as our vineyard is so young and Mark is a self-taught winemaker.
