Meet Maggie Adams of Blue Paddle SUP

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Adams.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Merriam-Webster defines passion as a strong liking or desire for or devotion to some activity, object, or concept. In 2012, I truly found my passion the very first time I tried Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP)! I’m a late bloomer, not sure if I ever knew what I wanted to do in life. I’ve worked a few jobs, or I’ve had a few different careers- doing research in a lab, being a mom, teaching Spanish to elementary kids, &, etc. Stand up Paddleboarding just turned on something inside of me!

I bought my first board and took a few SUP lessons. Eventually, I entered my first SUP race! From there my passion for SUP really took off! In 2013 I enrolled in the American Canoe Association SUP Level 2 certification and started my mobile SUP business Blue Paddle SUP. There are so many places to SUP in Southern California. We are fortunate to have the Aqua Hedionda Lagoon aka Carlsbad Lagoon in Carlsbad, CA. It offers a fantastic place to share my passion and knowledge of SUP with new paddlers.

Currently, I am doing SUP instruction 2-3x a week on the lagoon. I also SUP race, and SUP surf… So I spend my early morning’s training for upcoming races or SUP surf. Doing the other disciplines of SUP makes me a better paddler and therefore a better instructor.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of the struggles I’ve had come from the brick and mortar shop on the lagoon. Or from the city not wanting a mobile business utilizing the public access area. I’ve been in business almost 6yrs., and we have all figured out how to work together.

But at first, the city and the other rental businesses made you feel like you didn’t belong & shouldn’t be allowed to run your business. Purchasing the right equipment is important. I learned you need to invest in good quality equipment.

Marketing and getting new clients is a continuous effort.

We’d love to hear more about your practice.
I specialize in coaching the beginner stand up paddle boarder. As a company, I’m proud to offer quality time on the water with my clients. I don’t rent paddle boards. So I’m offering people a unique opportunity to explore the water with someone who has experience and knowledge.

I’m there to build up their confidence and empower them with the love of being on the water. SUP is an amazing & powerful therapy and experience for everyone, and I love to share that with people.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment is when I take a client out to SUP on the ocean for the first time! Sharing that excitement and nervousness with them is a very special moment on the water.
