Meet Jean Alm of Malahini Day Spa in Coronado Island

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean Alm.

Jean, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I came to California from the Midwest in 2012. I was visiting Coronado and fell in love with the Island. I decided that I wanted to stay here and got a job as the Manager of Malahini Day Spa. In 2013, I became the owner. I am a professional skin care massage therapist/ esthetician for over 25 years, beginning in China. Over the years I have developed many close friendships with my clients from all over the world. Many clients say I have the hands of an Angel with healing powers because I am able to relieve their bodies of painful areas they have had for a long time.

When I first started here I worked every day and slowly built my clientele through word of mouth and today I have entire families who come to my Spa for services. I take great pride in the small business I have created and enjoy my work and love helping clients with whatever they need.

Has it been a smooth road?
It was not easy, I had to build my client base from scratch. I did not get to the United States until 2009 and the language was very difficult to learn especially written as it is totally different from how Chinese is written. In Chinese, written characters represent entire words as opposed to using letters to spell words. It can be a very tough transition and I can speak English well today, yet still struggle with the written versions both reading and writing because English has so many unique words and rules.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Malahini Day Spa – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Malahini Day Spa is a small 3 room Spa located in beautiful Coronado Island on the Bay side in close proximity to the Ferry landing with all of the small shops and restaurants nearby. We are well known for our Couple Massages which are great for all occasions with a spouse or significant other. One of our rooms is dedicated as a couple’s room. We are also known for our ability to customize the service to the client’s specific needs, be it a 4 technique massage incorporating four different styles into one to a specialized facial catering to exact skin type, sensitivity, and PH of that particular client. We are proud of our professional skin care and tension relief/relaxation signature Spa packages. We have specialized equipment for delivery of some services. We are very personable and as I have mentioned have developed many long term friendships with clients who return to Coronado for specific seasons as well as full time residents. I am very happy to be a part of this close-knit community.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Coronado and San Diego are so beautiful that I feel like I am on vacation all the time.

I also like the huge military presence in the area. My husband is a retired 30 year Navy veteran and the San Diego community really supports military families well.
