Today we’d like to introduce you to Manuela Durson.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born in the beautiful Black Forest area of Germany, where three countries – Germany, Switzerland and France – meet.
Surrounded by such beautiful nature, photography has always played an important role in my life. I also spent a lot of time in the Mediterranean, especially Italy, Southern France and Spain and came to love the ocean. No wonder that many of my favorite photos are of the ocean.
I am drawn to the beauty of creation and the colorful aspects of nature. Post-processing my raw images and turning them into pieces of art gives me tremendous joy.
Please tell us about your art.
My art is photography. I make photographs capturing elements from nature and landscapes. I also love urban photography.
I love working on my photos in post processing to make them stand out and be different from what our eyes see. I often do that by doing long exposures in the first place, and also changing colors, creating a mood etc. in post. To me a photo does not necessarily need to reflect how the scene looked in the first place. I think that fine art photography is about creating pieces of art, just like a painter does. Only we do it with our cameras and computers.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
I am one of them! Making money in photography is not easy. I make a little money on selling photos on stock photography websites and have also sold some photos to private individuals.
My best advice is to not buy new gear in the beginning, but to buy used gear from reputable websites/companies or private parties. This will save a lot of money. Also, try working with what you have available to you, as great art can be created with most cameras and lenses.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I will have an upcoming gallery exhibit at Sparks Gallery in San Diego in 2019. My photos can be seen on my website www.manueladursonfineart.com & www.manueladursonphotography.com, on Instagram “mdurson”, and flickr “Manuela Durson.” Any photo is available for print.
