Meet Marci Malbrough of Ultra VIOLET Advanced Skincare and Repair

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marci Malbrough.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Marci. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My passion for skincare started at a very early age. I began my journey towards becoming a master Esthetician in 1988 as a freelance makeup artist and soon after a Marine Corps wife. As we relocated, my business could relocate with me. But it wasn’t my forever career. In 1999 we finally settled in San Diego for a long enough period of time that I could enroll in beauty school. With two small children and a deployed husband, I worked full time during the day and went to school every night from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. for six months to reach my goal. Upon graduation from school, like most, I began working at a spa for someone else. I was making minimum wage plus tips, which literally only paid for my youngest son’s daycare costs. But I knew this was the beginning, I had big dreams and had to start somewhere. In 2004 I had saved enough money that I could start my own business. I worked long hours and built a reputation for myself as an expert in my field. Continuing my education every year, keeping me at the top and the integrity of my business intact. Mentoring Esthetician’s and providing superior services and education for my clients has created a trust that I have built my business upon. Clients want someone in this profession who keeps up with the technology and the advances that this field demands. They want to be in expert hands, and that is what I have provided. This, partnered with my passion for skincare and educating my clients to maintain the results we have achieved together has allowed me to grow my business. In 2010, I moved my business to its current location, partnering with a medical spa, Radiance Wellness and Beauty. Working alongside a wonderful medical team has pushed me even harder to excel at esthetics. I have a growing knowledge of medical esthetics and procedures, combining these with excellent skincare produces results that keep my clients coming back for more. In 2012, I branded myself ultra VIOLET advanced skincare and repair, launching my website, online store, and a social media presence.

Since expanding my business, I have completed the NCEA Certification Program, this represents the highest skin care credential available in the United States. As an NCEA certified Esthetician I adhere to the code of ethics set forth by the accreditation and maintain my practice to the highest standards. By years end, I am looking to launch my skincare line, ultra VIOLET bioactive advanced skincare. Of course, I won’t stop there, I am constantly striving for more. I am so excited to share the triumphs of today and what the future of ultra VIOLET advanced skincare and repair has to offer San Diego…and the world.

Has it been a smooth road?
I was very fortunate that I had created a reputation for myself, and the referrals were flowing. But even with that, starting my business wasn’t a smooth road. I had to take a leap of faith and fortunately it paid off. Because my husband was deployed for most of 2002-2012 I was essentially a single parent. Launching a business and working the hours needed to be a success, with two children, was a daily struggle. I had to keep my head down, stay strong and dig in. The emotional struggle was the biggest obstacle. Staying strong, taking care of the kids, running a household and a business while I was worrying about my husband off in Iraq and Afghanistan. Unsure of the future on every level. Worrying if he would make it home, wondering if I would be a success. These years were some of the most stressful of my life. I was also unsure if I had done the right thing, leaving a steady income even if it wasn’t enough to live on. Failure wasn’t an option and the stress was real. You have to get outside of your own head and your doubts to be a success. Now as my business grew, I had a hard time keeping up with the demand. I know, not really a problem, but it was a challenge. I was stretching myself thin. There was a 12-16 week waiting list to get in for a facial and I was working 10-12 hours a day 5 to 6 days a week. During this time the location I was renting had to close and I had to relocate in a timely manner. But this created the perfect opportunity for me to expand my business. It landed me to the location where I am currently, with a team of ladies I love. In times of struggle some of the biggest opportunities are put right in front of you. Another leap that paid off. I’ve learned that there are no limitations to your success if you stay focused and constantly move forward.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
San Diego is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve been in. I love that it is a big, small city. What I mean by that is that it offers culture, night life, wonderful food, and amazing views but it doesn’t have that big city feel. A city full of adventure and life, health and wellness but with a relaxed vibe. This is the perfect setting for someone in my profession. We all want to play hard but not look like we have. You can go to the beach, the mountains, or visit another country all within only a short drive. Any time you are out and about in San Diego you feel like you are on vacation. People come here to visit paradise and we have it in our own backyard. There isn’t much I don’t like about our city except maybe the cost to live here. But it is worth it!
