Meet Marcos Navarro of West Coast Tavern in North Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcos Navarro.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It started when I was a young kid. I always wanted to be in the kitchen, I was intrigued by the aromas from the cooking of my grandparents and mother. I was always underfoot trying to taste what they were making.

I discovered my true passion for cooking at the age of 17, while working in a small Italian restaurant alongside my father, who taught me all the fundamentals of working in the kitchen.

After starting work at West Coast Tavern, I was inspired to grow into a larger role and worked with the previous Chefs to learn as much as I could about not just the kitchen but leadership also.

Today I’m proud to be running my own kitchen at West Coast Tavern.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a young guy in the kitchen sometimes I’ve struggled with gaining the respect of older employees who may be set in their ways. However. once people see my work ethic they are normally happy to work as part of the team.

West Coast Tavern – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
West Coast Tavern is a laid back urban tavern set in one of North Park’s most historic buildings. Our great food, drinks and people make West Coast Tavern the locals go-to in North Park.

We serve happy hour seven days a week from 4pm-7pm with a great variety of both food and drink offerings.

Serving a full menu until 10pm every night with a late-night menu from 10pm-midnight, we’re a great place to visit for a late-night snack.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
When I became executive Chef at West Coast Tavern. I’m so excited to grow the menu. Join us for the Spring menu launch in mid-March!
