Meet Grayson Adams of MAREA Coffee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Grayson Adams.

Grayson, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Marea Coffee began as just an idea back in early 2015 after I wanted to create a coffee company which was built around living a positive active lifestyle. I didn’t necessarily want to create a “niche” coffee which was gonna make you run faster, jump higher or anything like that, I just wanted to create a great tasting coffee that you could enjoy as part of your daily routine. I wanted to bring this coffee directly to our customer’s door via an online sales channel and offering a subscription-based service.

After being told a couple times I could never become the next Starbucks, which was never my intention, I was beyond thrilled by the positive reaction I received from co-founders Joe Bettinger and Loren Laguens.

I had known Joe through our mutual Mortgage Financing background and when he decided to leave that industry to join an international coffee importer doing sales, I knew I needed to bounce the idea off of him and get his feedback. Joe immediately saw the vision of the company and was sold. I was beyond excited for him to come along this journey and I knew I needed to approach another friend of mine who could help build our incredible team of Co-owner/Ambassadors, and that person was Loren Laguens.

Loren loved the idea, was hyped to get going ASAP and we were off and running. Shortly after a few initial meetings over a couple beers at Loren’s house, our friend Greg Moser expressed interest in helping bring this product to market via the internet. Joe and Loren and I have ZERO backgrounds in building websites or anything to do with E-Commerce.

Greg, on the other hand, has an incredible background and resume in entrepreneurship, web design, and e-commerce marketing. We knew Greg had to be on board, and another co-founder came along with him, ReyJay Solares. ReyJay is the brains behind the building and maintaining our website and marketing.

It is also important to note an Original member of the MAREA crew who came up with our logo is Jamison Reisbeck. Jamo, as we like to call him, is a multi-talented graphic design artist and our feedback on our branding has consistently been nothing but positive, to say he knocked it out of the park would be an understatement.

At the beginning of 2017, MAREA Coffee was alive and ready to rock n roll!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think anyone would tell you that when starting a business they’ve encountered a smooth road, however, the process of MAREA growth has been constantly exciting. I often get asked this question and I love explaining how our growth process has been. Every individual plays a specific role in MAREA and they play it well.

Along with this journey, I have been blown away by the fact every speed bump we have encountered has never once turned into an insurmountable “brick wall”. What I mean by this is we have never encountered any obstacle which has ever given myself, or any of us a sense of “we can’t do this”. Our team is in constant contact with each other, we share ideas, we compromise on disagreements, share ideas and work together to ensure our brand stays on the right path to accomplish what we want MAREA to become.

Please tell us about MAREA Coffee.
MAREA Coffee has always set out to be an online, direct to consumer coffee company which offers our customers the ability to have freshly roasted coffee delivered to their doorsteps within 2 weeks of roasting. Our motto has always been we area brand that encourages you to live a positive active lifestyle and to always “Enjoy Your Ritual”. Enjoy Your Ritual is our tagline and what that means is whether you are getting up in the morning to go for a surf, do some yoga, huck yourself down a mountain, or simply get ready for a day in the office, we want MAREA to be a part of that daily routine. Coffee is a very ritualistic part of peoples lives, and we believe in it 100%.

What we feel is so special about MAREA is the team of Co-Owner/Ambassadors we have brought on to bring the vision of a positive active lifestyle to a reality. We wanted to reach out to a wide array of individuals who are known superstars, legends and icons in their respective fields. This group includes the following: Professional Surfer Rob Machado, Professional Skateboarder Danny Way, Professional Skateboarder and Artist Alphonzo Rawls, Professional Photographer Todd Glaser, Professional Filmmaker Taylor Steele, Professional Skier Chris Benchetler, Professional Snowboarder Kimmy Fasani, and also Professional Artist Skye Walker.

All of these individuals are avid coffee drinkers and we look forward to launching their own signature roasts throughout the rest of 2018 and into 2019.

Another thing I wanted to share is we are super proud to have recently partnered with the Challenged Athlete’s Foundation which is headquartered here in San Diego. We are now their official coffee partner and we will pour coffee at upcoming events, and we are really looking forward to creating a special blend with proceeds going back to the foundation. We couldn’t be more stoked on what CAF is all about and it is an honor to be working with them.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
There is a cool quote I often see on the internet and social media channels, “the only time you should ever look back, is to see how far you’ve come”. If we were to start all over again, I would not necessarily change anything, We have done nothing but learn and grown in a positive direction since day one.
