Meet Margit Whitlock of Architectural Concepts in Hillcrest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Margit Whitlock.

Margit, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
A native Californian yet grew up in Portland, Oregon and graduated with a Bachelors of Architecture from University of Oregon. Straight from architecture school, I was employed by SGPA, San Diego as a design intern where I worked on big box retail centers and masterplans for retail / commercial developments. After a few years I moved to JWDA, San Diego where I worked on designing hotels, condominiums and specialty retail. Then in 1992 I established my own design firm here is San Diego, CA.

ACI Architectural Concepts is a Planning, Architecture and Interior Design firm committed to the highest quality in design and client service. ACI provides architectural services nationally and internationally with an expertise in hospitality/resort/vacation ownership and creative commercial environments.

Has it been a smooth road?
How fun would it be if we didn’t encounter some challenges? Starting my practice and a family in the same year may not have been good planning but we made it through. Managing the ups and downs of work and cash flow is always an art form. As a small firm; constantly staying ahead of design trends and technology is a challenge too. Then there is the talent pool and finding the right people and clients, developing a firm culture + brand to encompass the work lifestyle. But all of the challenges make you a better entrepreneur so one learns and moves forward.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Having been in business 25 years we have learned the value of servicing our clients’ needs and goals for the project.

We take a lot of time to work with our clients and consultants to make the best possible outcome with whatever the constraints are. We are up front and honest making sure the integrity of the design is foremost important. Our clients for the most part are private sector developers with a boutique vision of their projects.

They come to ACI for the creative talent our staff has and for the way we invest ourselves in our projects.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
We are still in a robust market so I say yes and try to collaborate with others to build a portfolio. We do have seven schools of Design, so the competition is stiff for emerging professionals. Network and engage the community, there will always be your future mentor waiting if you seek them out.
