Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Roque-Lopes.
Maria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The K9 Guardians Foundation was formed after one of the members(who just passed away in March) kept reading articles and seeing on the news, stories about k9’s being killed in the line of duty. All four founding members of the K9 guardians would frequently have dinner together and the topic would come up again and again. All passionate dog lovers, we knew something had to be done and we knew we could make a difference.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Although we thought it would be super easy to start a dog foundation, it wasn’t. There are many steps necessary to start a 501c3 nonprofit. Some of the items are obtaining a tax ID, articles of incorporation, bylaws, board of directors, board meetings to name a few, but most importantly, money.
K9 Guardians Foundation – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The K9 guardians donate ballistic vests, medical kits (trauma, first aid, narco), and Rexspecs eyewear to police k9’s, military working k9’s And search and rescue dogs. We started the nonprofit with all of our own money. With so much more demand, we have started fundraising.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
When we were contacted to donate Rexspecs eyewear to military k9’s serving all around the world, we were truly honored. We have a special place in our hearts for all, but the military truly is amazing, so we were able to donate 100 pairs!
