Meet Mariah Brownwood of Royale! in Ocean Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Brownwood.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
While living out in Austin, my husband had the idea to start a food trailer. He wanted to serve burgers and called it Royale with Cheese. At that time I was running an event space full time and would help him out at the trailer when I could. That’s when I realized that we worked really well together as a couple. Once we moved back to San Diego we decided to sell the trailer in Austin. We ended up starting Nopalito Farm with our family in North San Diego where we grow hops, citrus, avocados and vegetables.

We were mainly focusing on running our farm until we were approached by Park & Rec in University Heights about bringing Royale with Cheese to their establishment. We jumped on the opportunity to be there in house burger joint. Fast forward to 2017 and we found a cute spot in Ocean Beach that we could call our own. We now go by Royale! where we serve the most tasty burgers & fresh cocktails.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I never thought Royale with Cheese would turn into what it has turned into. We both have strong service industry backgrounds and I always wanted to have our own a restaurant/bar. Royale just kept calling to us. I think the biggest struggles have been trying to find a balance between running a farm, a restaurant and raising a child. Luckily we have a strong family support that has helped us tremendously.

Please tell us about Royale!.
Royale is our take on a classic diner. We are known for our burgers, specifically our Royale with Cheese (organic grass-fed beef, gruyere cheese, bacon, pickles, mustard, special sauce & caramelized onions). We specialize in using quality ingredients and try to source locally as much as we can, especially from our Farm. Our cocktail program is pretty rad, using fresh juices & syrups made in-house. Not many restaurants have their own farm they can pull ingredients from, which sets us apart.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Honestly, I am living my dream life.

    I have the pleasure of knowing and becoming friends with this talented lady while she was working at a lovely French restaurant in SF.

    I happened to live next door so I was there a lot! I saw her always work so hard and remained calm, cool and totally collected! She is the real deal and I couldn’t be happier for her. Love you lady!❤️❤️❤️
