Today we’d like to introduce you to Maribel Salcido.
Maribel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Well, where can I begin…
It all started back in high school (Hueneme High) where I got the opportunity to take art classes, and venture into my passion. At the time, I really didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, and had no real guidance. But I knew that I wanted to be more active in school (I was very shy initially) and that I enjoyed art and writing. So I joined Yearbook and by my senior year, I became Editor-in-Chief and also a photographer for our newspaper. It’s too unreal to think that after so many clues, I had no realization of what my calling was!! I sometimes think that since I didn’t really think it was anything I could pursue in the real world, that it wasn’t anything to take very serious. But as lost as I was, there was this amazing teacher of mine, my yearbook advisor, the person that change my life, that told me to go to college.
I come from a family of 9 children, and the first in my family’s generation to go to college. It was a very challenging road to take, but I made it. And so I did get accepted to UCSB, and completed a BA degree in Spanish Literature to become a bilingual teacher and help others. As I went down that path, I realized that maybe teaching wasn’t my thing. I wasn’t really following my dream. Life kicked in and I ended up working for Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where I found an interest in joining the Human Resources team. At that point in my life, I moved to San Diego to be closer to my family and got hired at Rady Children’s Hospital where I got the opportunity to work in Human Resources. I worked as Recruiter, and just really enjoyed bring joy to new hires. I really loved working with people and ended up at that hospital for 10+ years, about 15+ years in Healthcare.
But Art continued to call me. I always dreamt of being a photographer. I am a very lucky individual to have had the opportunity to change careers and actually pursue my passion. I quit my job when my second child (daughter) was born. At that point, my husband and I agreed that we could balance our budget and afford for me to stay home with our daughter. It wasn’t long before I started thinking that my daughter would be starting school and what my next step would be. I knew that this was it. I had 2 choices! Go back to HR which was awesome but still…to have the opportunity to pursue what I’ve always dreamt of doing! So I joined a community college and went through their Associate’s degree program and pursued my dream.
Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to share my story with you. Life has really been a fantastic rollercoaster and am very happy to be where I am. It’s just been the most amazing experience for me. My next goal in photography is to work with a magazine! I have been shooting now for over 3 years. I have been very lucky to have had opportunities including Glow at The Parq, Police & Fire Championships, concert at Del Mar Fair, and Jose Montano Foundation to continue to build my skills. In the process I found that I just love combining the essence of individuals and natural landscapes to create beautiful portraits and art. I really enjoy working with families and children, and newborns, and individuals, along with working events. I am realizing all my dreams and recently have been doing some commercial work as well.
I am just so grateful to be here and just love what I do.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It is challenging to start all over again in a career, especially after working for so long in a great company. But it has been so worth it for me. I am pursuing a dream that I’ve had for a very long time. It is difficult initially as you are introducing yourself to your community. Being a new, not very well experience photographer can be challenging. But as I stretch my wings, I can’t wait to continue to push forward and get people to know who I am. I feel like I’ve hit the bigger bumps at this point and it should be a smoothing sailing!!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Artsy Chick Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
What I specialize in is portrait photography. I just love nature and all that it gives to us. So I combine individuals and natural landscapes to create beautiful portraits and art.
What I wish to illustrate in my images is your true self. My goal is to get you comfortable enough to be yourself and capture the true art of photography, which is to show the person’s essence, their natural beauty, to capture love.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I have to say that I am a very lucky person to have the opportunity to pursue my dream. I am so thankful to the universe!
