Meet Marina Boubion of Athene Properties and Zandunga Properties

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marina Boubion.

Marina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started working on fast food restaurant when I moved to this country. I was 20 years old making minimum wage and going to school at night. I always had an interest in real estate and finance. So I got a job working for a lending institution and started working in the real estate loan dept. I feel in love with real estate and I was fascinated with the idea of owning property.

Somehow I felt that if I started buying real estate that it would give me security for later in life. I have always envisioned myself being wealthy and successful. I wanted to live a good life with nice things. (somehow I have never dreamed small). At 22 years old I was already a homeowner and trying to find a way to be involved and buy more real estate. At 24 years old, I decided to become a real estate agent and I started working for a mobile home/real estate company and started investing in real estate.

My first investment property sold in 4 months and made a $50k profit. After doing the math I realized that if I would have stayed at my fast food job making minimum wage, it would have taken me about 10 years to make the $50k. After that I concentrated in purchasing distress properties, fixing them and renting them. It was hard work and long hours, however, I felt that someday it was going to pay off.

After that, I started acquiring more properties. I quit being a real estate agent and decided to work on my own investments I also did independent work for different mortgage institutions. I felt it was necessary to learn all aspects of home lending for my business.

I took advantage of the mortgage collapse in 1986 and in 2007 and purchased foreclosed properties. 30+ years later, I am still doing exactly the same thing; I have expanded and owned residential and commercial properties out of state. I have also started writing my first children’s book and hope to be finished sometime early this year.

I have always dreamed of being successful. With dedication and hard work, dreams do come true.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, there have been many headaches along the way, and many sleepless nights thinking that I maybe had made a mistake. however, I don’t give up easily and when I decided to start the business I was determined to make it work, and if problems occurred along the way I was only going to work harder to solve them and make them work.

I feel that there is a journey for each one of us in this world and that we need to make the best of it and wake up every morning and see how one can improve physically, mentally and emotionally.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
There are several companies I run, all of them are real estate and investing and probably my forte.

My companies consist of owning and leasing residential and commercial properties. There is a shopping center, a government building, several residential properties, Re-Maxx headquarters bldg a retirement community and they are located throughout 5 states.

The companies specialize in rental/leasing of residential and commercial properties.

What I am most proud of is that I treat everybody with respect regardless of their status. I treat everybody the way I expect to be treated. I have given many opportunities to people that were not financially stable and allowed them to succeed as individuals. I am most proud that most my businesses have been successful.

The companies I manage and own are small enough to give personalized service rather than being large corporations were customers can become just a number.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I am the biggest fan of San Diego, and I feel incredibly lucky I live here. San Diego is one of the best places to invest in real estate, San Diego has amazing weather on top if being a beautiful city, We have everything here from beautiful beaches to mountains close by deserts. and that attracts people from all over the world to buy and invest.

I cannot count the number of times I have run into people that are moving here for the sole purpose of better weather.
