Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisa Garcia.
Marisa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been an entrepreneur since my teens. Growing up poor with a single mom, she taught us to be self-sufficient in whatever we chose.
In 2010, everything changed. I went on a camping trip to docweiler state beach in Los Angeles ca. As the evening came I was riding my bicycle in the dark when this kid flew by me with these glowing bike wheels that captivated me. I chased him down to see exactly what this was, he replied a guy named norm will be coming tonight who sells them & installs the lights. The kid shows me a mini battery box mounted inside the spokes attached to a bright string of Led lights that gets wrapped around each bike spoke. finally, norm came he was awesome I got my lights installed & I could not wait to ride my bike down the bike path as soon as I took off riding immediately people were cheering & stopping me it made me feel like a movie star, it was exciting. I felt safe on my bike because people could see me. I knew right away this was something special. I told norm I wanted to expand this idea to San Diego & beyond there was nothing like this. I didn’t have much to invest but $300 & a backpack to carry them in. I had a plan that I would go to campgrounds because they have many kids & families riding bicycles in the dark. I wasn’t sure of anything but I knew these lights could save lives, my 1st stop was Santee Lakes that evening came I turned on my lights & oh my it was like Disney land the excitement for these lights was overwhelming not just kids wanted them but parents & adults were getting them too. I would go to different places & sometimes even get asked to leave but I never quit because I knew I had something special. I formed my own company called light me up safety lights & from there I never looked back. I started this light craze in the campgrounds. I’ve had several contracts with resorts such as Campland on the bay, KOA & Chula vista RV resort to set up our light booth & light up bicycles for their guests & host the San Diego electric light parades. This journey has taken me farther than I have expected. I have my own brand of lights one light will make 7 colors with multi-functional uses. I have traveled to many places to light up people’s life’s & events such as NASCAR, burning man, fundraisers & light me up birthday parties. The bicycle culture is on the rise especially the night glow rides which has allowed me to partner up with organizations to create something fun for San Diego bicycle enthusiasts. We have a monthly Glow night ride & themes while promoting bicycle safety in a fun way with lights music & good vibes all are welcome to join. We gather @ Pedego electric bikes for a fun glow bike rides… See Venice electric light parade. We host Official chapter rides through the city streets with stops along the route. Bike rentals are available if you would like to join us & please see events under San Diego electric light parade.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Some of the demographics I work in it’s hard for some to accept that I’m a one woman show who doesn’t mind getting. My hands & arms dirty with bike grease to earn a living but it’s a challenge that keeps me moving.
Please tell us about Lightmeup Safety Lights.
My business brings fun because we create excitement & fun we get people excited to ride bicycles @ night with our lights like a Disney land affect & I’m the tinker bell of what of drives me. I’m a hard worker People in the community know me for my authenticity & honesty, because of the demands for the lights in the summer times & special events it has allowed me to teach at risk teens how to use their hands & help me install lights those are proud moments for me because people I have helped along the way I see them now thriving after giving them a chance. What sets me apart I feel is that I’m a woman owned business who doesn’t hesitate to work hard & expanded our capabilities to be able to offer custom lighting on items such as bike frames strollers, wagons, scooters, skateboards.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
In business, you can take the extra mile to make a customer happy but I’ve learned that sometimes it’s never enough & you just have to do the best without ever thinking you could’ve done more.
