Meet Maritza Rivera

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maritza Rivera.

Hi Maritza, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I initially started off as a makeup artist. My family is full of hairstyling artists and one other makeup artist, my older sister, Nadia. I was inspired by her and started practicing my own makeup. I got really good at my makeup artistry at the young age of nine years old. I would then do my older sister’s makeup and hairstyling when they went out on the town. By high school, I’d have friends come to my work, where I was a cashier at Kmart, ask me when I was off to get their hair and makeup done. From that moment, I knew what my calling was and was confident on my career path. Back then, makeup artistry wasn’t a lucrative business. I moved to San Diego in 2003 and started working in the financial industry on top of makeup artistry & hairstyling.

Fast forward to 2019. I organized a Valentine’s Day event for models and customers to have the opportunity to get beautiful images for their loved ones. I hired a photographer, booked the 7 Grand in North Park, and provided makeup and hairstyling for five ladies. Unfortunately, the photographer took my money and ran! I had these unedited images that were supposed to be edited and provided to the ladies who participated in the event. I wasn’t going to let these ladies down. I had to learn how to edit images professionally.

From that point on, I decided I would become a photographer and vowed to provide professional and prompt service. Since becoming a photographer, it has opened up so many creative doors for me. I am now a wardrobe stylist, creative director, and posing instructor. I have now been published as a makeup artist and photographer 14 times and have done runway and red carpet events.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a smooth road. I’ve had individuals, not like my work and felt defeated at times. Having a great support system is key, and that’s what kept me going. Also, I never stopped learning and perfecting my craft. Having other professionals cancel or bail has added more professions to my artistry.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve been a makeup artist for 18 years and a photographer for almost three years. I started off with providing service to friends and family. From there, I was providing service to brides and bridal parties. Because of my efficiency, I moved on to runway and production. My highlight was when I was invited on to a fashion show event and completed hairstyling and makeup Application on 14 models. I was the first to arrive and the last to leave.

My biggest accomplishment is teaching myself photography and learning it quickly. Being published in many magazines is very fulfilling and I feel rewarded for all the obstacles I overcame in the process. I do all concepts of photography and to other photographers, that’s always a conflict and topic of discussion. Veteran photographers believe you should have one style of photography. Unfortunately, my camera does not have a label on it that says “only for wedding photography” or “only for maternity images.” Photography is art! It skies the limit!!

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Learn and NEVER stop learning. Be able to take constructive criticism and apply it to tour artistry. Do what makes you happy and take advice but make sure that it’s advice that will help you move forward in your career. Stay positive, ambitious, and true to your heart and everything else will follow. Don’t set your limits to what others expect of you.
