Today we’d like to introduce you to Marla Salewsky.
Hi Marla, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Thank you for having me. Previously, I was working full-time as an officer for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. While I was honored to wear a badge, the job itself left me feeling less than fulfilled.
I noticed that I was always looking for ways to encourage my partners to get healthier. Watching other officers who were out of shape and not fit enough to fight back—and getting injured on the job. This experience made me reaffirm that health, fitness, and longevity were more valuable than money. I thrive best when I am utilizing my knowledge and studies to give individuals tools to help them enhance the way they feel about themselves and get them healthier.
In addition to my training in law enforcement, I hold an ACE Certification in Personal Training and Nutrition. Before I went into law enforcement, I was renting space from a gym owner to train clients, but I always wanted more. Renting space left me feeling like I needed to excel to reach the next level. Late last year, an opportunity to realize my dream of running my own studio and being my own boss materialized . I jumped at the chance to run Envision with the goal of helping my clients reach their best health and fitness.
So far it’s a ton of work, but very rewarding. I love helping people make positive changes in their lives and I feel accomplished when I see improvements in my clients’ health and the way their body flows better without pain. I’ve seen clients become happier overall with changes in their mindset—believing in themselves and the self-esteem it creates.
I’m excited about the future and new offerings at Envision. We’ve expanded the programming at the studio and have added fitness clothing and other products. We’re organizing a variety of weekend workshops, and collaborating with other teachers and trainers in the health and fitness field to fully utilize the large studio space.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business is never easy, but in my case, I had a leg up because I took over a longtime existing business with a stable clientele. I came in with fresh eyes and saw how much potential the spa and workout space had with a just bit of modernization. I scheduled painters to work at night when I wasn’t training clients, had new flooring installed in the spa area, and improved and modernized the entire space. Existing clients were amazed at the transformation, and new clients see a clean, refreshed studio.
The other challenge I’m still figuring out is the work/life balance between my kids, the personal training schedule plus the extra work that comes with being a business owner. I’m a single mother of three, so there are a lot of moving parts at our house! Fortunately, my entire family is supportive of my dream of running my own business, so I get a lot of cooperation and moral support.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Envision Personalized Health?
Envision is different from a typical gym in many ways. Most importantly, the sessions are private, or semi-private if you opt for partner training. All the focus is on the client having exactly the right workout to reach their goals. Trainers create new exercise plans before each session, so there is no boredom—no wondering what to do next. Most clients can’t believe how fast the time flies and how much we pack into each session.
The other big difference is our studio is huge at 3,655 square feet! The space is open, airy, modern and clean. Equipment is wiped down and sanitized after each client. In addition, the studio is quick and easy to access as it’s conveniently located in Mission Valley, just off Mission Gorge Road. If you’re looking for a one-stop wellness center that offers personal training, fitness workshops, massage, skin care, or nutrition counseling, Envision is worth checking out.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
When the pandemic hit, everything changed for gyms and personal trainers. Everyone outfitted their homes with exercise equipment and watched fitness routines online. I think that people are going to realize they are bored with zoom workouts and not really seeing the results they want. Whether a client wants muscle gain, increased flexibility, weight loss, or increased endurance, a professional trainer with the right knowledge and equipment can put a client on the fast track to results.
I believe that people are realizing how much they missed the “gym experience”, especially the energy and motivation that comes with working out around like-minded individuals or a trainer. Having set appointments provides accountability that home workouts don’t. Attending a fitness or yoga class, or even getting a massage was a simple pleasure that was restricted because of the pandemic. Now that people are getting back to the gym and their favorite fitness class (and getting massages!) I believe the industry will be growing steadily in the future.
