Meet Mary Sasso

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Sasso.

Mary, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
While living in Japan, I decided to re-kindle my love of photography by enrolling in the New York Institute of Photography. A year later, I had my Certificate in Professional Photography. Armed with my education and an upcoming move to San Diego, I started Mary Sasso Photography. I have been very fortunate for the opportunity to continue my education in Photography and Adobe Photoshop while working as a portrait photographer. I have won awards for my Landscapes and my photos have been published locally and internationally.

Most recently, I have teamed up with Miracle Babies in San Diego to sponsor a photo calendar fundraiser with the hopes of helping more families with babies in the NICU survive the day to day life in the intensive care unit. I feel so lucky to have had the opportunities to grow in my art and to have met so many wonderful people along the way. There is no better feeling than to know a photo I created will be cherished for generations to come.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I believe in facing adversity with a smile. Just as my business was starting to pick up I had to take a hiatus to care for my daughter who was born 4 months early. While shutting down was difficult, I am so lucky that I have been able to stay home with her for the past two years. Now that she is big and strong it’s time to get back to my pursuits! After having a critically ill child in the NICU, I know how important memories can be and I look forward to help capture those memories for other families!

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I specialize in Family Photography, but I have worked in almost every field of photography over the years and nothing scares me! My formal education in Photography sets me apart from other photographers. I know the fundamental elements of composition and lighting and I can create photos that showcase my knowledge. I try to make sure that my clients are comfortable during a shoot and leaving feeling good about themselves and their session.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always into art and art classes but I didn’t think I could make it a profession. In 2010, I received my Bachelor of Science in Education and became certified to teach. After I fell in love with a sailor, I realized I would need a job that could move when we moved! I made the very easy decision to try to make a career being creative again!
