Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Stapleton.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Mary. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Started business in 2010, during recession after being laid off. I began in the trade in 1997 at 37 years of age! Had a child to support and wanted to earn a decent living. When I got my C-10 Electrical License the business started to take off and grow through mostly word of mouth and referrals from people I knew in my neighborhood. Women were a great support for me. Being a female really has paid off in the construction industry as there are so few women contractors. 7 years later I have 2 employees and a service van on the road. We do mostly residential but commercial work is also an option. Lots of EV Chargers, esp. Teslas. I’ve got a great crew of 2 in the field and looking to hire at least one more. Business is booming right now. I am trying to take a step back and run the business so really learning that side is my new challenge. I feel a lot of pride in being a Female Electrician and would like to expose more young women to this trade as I become more of a manager and have time. I’ve used the SBDC and Accion as free resources for help all along the way.
Has it been a smooth road?
Either being too busy or sitting out the slow periods. Getting a decent rate of loans and lines of credit, even with great personnel credit. Finding great employees.
Staying on top of all the admin work, as I am more used to doing field work! Trying to learn those skills as a small business owner. Knowing when to ask for help!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Ms. Sparky Electric story. Tell us more about the business.
We specialize in New Construction & Remodels. EV Chargers are very big right now. I am a Tesla Certified Installer and you can find Ms. Sparky Electric on the Tesla Website. We pride ourselves in quality workmanship and leaving the job site or your home completely clean. I am a Woman Owned Business as well as a General Contractor with a C-10 Electrical License. That alone sets my company apart from most of my competitors. My logo draws a lot of attention and I get a big thumbs up almost daily driving around in my branded vehicles. I added a Service Van this year and hired the best Journeyman I know to be a part of my team. Sales have doubled since this development. I look forward to growing the company with additional great people and managing the business.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Shifting to renewables and many more Electric Vehicles-which need home charging stations. I think that using the newest technology will keep this industry viable into the future.
