Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Ellis.
Matt, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was inspired to start Measurabl based on my experience as Director of Sustainability Solutions at CBRE, the world’s largest commercial real estate company. There’s this enormous pain that companies of all types face when attempting to comply with the ever-growing regime of investor, regulator, and consumer demands for transparency around environmental and social performance. Without a solution on the market to streamline the collection and reporting of non-financial data, many hours were wasted on manual entry and computation.
I seized this gap and turned it into an opportunity to identify and mitigate the environmental and social impacts of companies using software. My goal was to create software that would accelerate a new era of transparency throughout the global economy. At the time, there was little money or interest in “sustainability” start-ups, so I started Measurabl as a self-funded enterprise, recruited a world-class board, assembled a veteran team of software engineers and domain experts, and bootstrapped the company to be a lean, efficient software platform for energy, sustainability, and corporate responsibility reporting.
Four years later, Measurabl has developed into a 25-person team working tirelessly to develop Measurabl’s software, home to 4.5 billion square feet (and growing) database representing more than 22,000 properties across 65 countries. Most recently, Measurabl announced a partnership with the ULI Greenprint and contributing to the formation of San Diego’s 2030 District. Measurabl has been featured in industry media like Greenbiz, as well as national media like the Wall Street Journal.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
With the lack of funding for “sustainability” startups circa 2012, when I began working on Measurabl, starting a company on my own was challenging. I was fortunate to have a network of people supporting me, including some who are on Measurabl’s board, from the beginning.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Measurabl – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Commercial real estate represents nearly 20% of the world’s energy and water usage, 30% of its raw materials usage, and 20% of its carbon emissions. The complex issue of sustainability does not have a single answer; this requires a multifaceted, flexible solution across industries. Measurabl fills the role of making sustainability data easy to collect, manage, and report regardless of a company’s size or type.
Measurabl is sustainability solved by software. More than 22,000 properties – representing 4.5BN square feet across 65 countries – use Measurabl to measure, manage, and improve their energy and sustainability performance, making us the world’s fastest growing enterprise energy and sustainability software. Measurabl gives companies the ability to automatically collect utility data, report on sustainability performance, and identify energy and water efficiency opportunities while simplifying reports to global sustainability benchmarks like GRESB and CDP. Our scalability has helped Measurabl emerge as the global clearinghouse for corporate nonfinancial data, empowering companies and their stakeholders to act and invest sustainably.
Behind the software, Measurabl is a 25-person team that cares about solving the problem of our generation. We believe technology plays a central role in an overarching solution to a sustainable world.
