Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Hayward.
Matt, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started out painting on surfboards sometime around 2010. Since then I have been painting on and off for fun in a pretty limited fashion until about 2015 when I sold my first painting. Once I realized others liked my work and were excited to share space on their walls I spiraled into an art binge. I have been selling my works through friends, Instagram and just participated in my first art show in 2017. Over the past 2 years I have been busy creating pieces for local residents and art collectors around the United States. My works have just seemed to catch on, usually because someone would see a piece on their friends’ walls or online and would want one for themselves.
Currently my focus is the ocean, above and below. I am an avid fisherman and do a lot of custom paintings for the fishing community as well for collectors who just love the ocean.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest challenge is myself because I am very critical of my work. My supporters have always given me very positive feedback but it took me a long time before I could actually think of myself an artist and really start to promote my work. I have never taken an art class and instead rely only my own principles and artistic concepts that I have developed over time. My paintings were originally done solely as a past time; I never had the intention of selling them. But once I realized there was a market for my offbeat ocean creatures I never looked back.
Please tell us about Chovy Art.
My business consists of my (also artistic) wife and me. My wife helps with photographing my images and giving me critical advice on much of my work. I spend my time covered in paint. I am known mostly for creating creatures of the ocean and scenes above and beyond water. My style is unique – I refer to it as the “Chovy Style” named after my boat the Chovy. I am most proud of my work that is hanging on my collectors’ walls and being able to bring a little “Chovy” to other people’s living rooms.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My fondest memories from my childhood were all created in nature. My parents were hiking and camping fanatics so at an early age I experienced many different outdoor environments. Spending time outdoors as a child helped shape my love for the ocean and all natural environments.
