Meet Mavis Carolina Herrera

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mavis Carolina Herrera.

Mavis Carolina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hello, I am Mavis Carolina Herrera and this is my story. I grew up in San Quintin, Baja California a small town with a lot of poverty. Since I was three years old I got involved in helping kids at the paper camps by providing toys, clothes and free medical assistant performed by my Dad. One of my favorite childhood memories was playing outside barefoot with some of the kids from the paper camp. My nanny used to chase me and made me put on my shoes, and I ended up crying because I wanted to play barefoot, like all the other kids. As I grew up, I finally understood the kids played barefoot because their parents didn’t have money to buy them shoes. That day, I made myself a promise to help kids in need. At the age of thirteen, I moved to the United States without my parents due to the high crime in Mexico and was lucky enough to see my parents for fourteen days out of the year. After graduating college I started traveling by myself around the world to unknown places and fall in love with nature and with people’s souls around the world.

During my travels, I learned about sustainability and the impact of plastic pollution on the environment and the negative effects on our human health. It was shocking to learn how plastic is killing our oceans, wildlife animals, humans and the bacteria that makes 10% of earth’s oxygen. After coming back from a business trip I left my job and promise myself that everything I do from now on will be with a meaningful purpose in life. On May 28, 2019 Mavis by Herrera was born with the idea to transform plastic pollution into a sustainable and ethical bag. At the moment I am an honor to work with beautiful artisans people from the third age, domestic violence survivors and moms working from home. I am beloved grateful and honor to work with amazing and strong people!

Has it been a smooth road?
I am self-founded and 100% of the time is just me wearing different hats from production, execution, budgets, marketing, finance. The journey hasn’t been easy but is worth it. Before starting this journey I let go of everything because when you don’t have anything you have everything.

In the first months, one of my biggest challenges was my self, I learned to be stronger than my thoughts. Next, is rejection, not everyone would like your product and is ok. I learned to transform a “No” into something positive and move forward.

At the moment, I am enjoying this new journey and my vision is to move forward and prevent plastic from entering our landfills. Also, I want to create more jobs and I want to leave this world knowing that I did something good for the environment and in people’s lives.
