Meet Max Weiss of Max Weiss Photography in North County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Max Weiss.

Max, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My father loved collecting photography. I liked seeing what he would purchase from famous photographers. I bought my first DSLR in 2009 and had a lot of friend and family support. As I got more into shooting professionally, I upgraded my camera and took classes. The classes were an extremely great help in opening my mind to what the camera can do. Pretty much eliminated the use of any photo editing software.

As i got even further into photography, I started to also get into taking and editing wedding videos. My Friend Adam also helps during these times with composition and editing. we have a unique way of doing these wedding videos. We have the couple come in for an interview, ask them simple questions like how did you meet? How did you know he/she was the one? And we put the interview to the video. I always get a great feeling when people tell me how great something looks that I created.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, definitely not. As an artist, you own the work you create, and some people don’t understand that. I lost some friends because of that. I took some photos of some friends and asked that they do not post them on social media because I sell the photos and I do not want people copying them. Unfortunately they posted them and I had them taken down. First I asked but they refused. I had to talk to a few copyright lawyers and my uncle who is a patent lawyer. That was a good six months of their friends even leaving bad reviews on my yelp because of something they didn’t understand. But in the end it actually worked for the best. I had more people that I didn’t know look at my work because they were curious to what happened and ended up getting more business out of it, so I’m actually glad it happened.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
The main focus at this time are wedding videos/photography. We are known for our unique way of interviewing the couple before the wedding and adding that interview to the video. The time to receive the photos are a lot faster than most other photographers because I do most of my “editing” in camera versus having to put them all on the computer first and going through them individually and editing them. I am most proud of the team work that Adam and I have. We both give ideas that one of us might not see and also we both have skills that the other one doesn’t.

What were you like growing up?
I was a hand full when I was young. I grew up with ADD/ADHD. I always thought on a logical scale which got me in trouble a lot of the time. I started playing drums at a very young age and that has stuck with me till this day. Drums were a great thing for me especially for someone with ADD/ADHD. I toured with a band in 2011 which was a great experience. Most of my art teachers told my mother that I was gonna be an artist, they were right.
