Meet May and Jay Hoehn of Jay & May Complete Health in La Jolla and Del Mar

Today we’d like to introduce you to May and Jay Hoehn.

Jay has been a trainer in La Jolla for over 25 years. He moved to CA from FL at 18 years old, and shortly thereafter, found out he had cancer. Since that experience, he has been on a mission to stay healthy!

May has been in the health industry for the last 15 years, and part of the fitness community for the last 6 (since meeting her now husband, Jay).

May opened up the Del Mar location (MayQFit) 2 years ago and it’s been an amazing 2 years. They recently opened the La Jolla location in May 2017.

They have built their business on referrals from clients. When their clients get the results they asked for, and enjoy the 2-4 times each week they spend with them, it makes it easy to share their success with their friends and family.

Often times, they start with 1 person, then start working with their spouse, and then the kids, and eventually extended family and friends, colleagues at work, etc. Jay has some clients that have been with him for 15+ years.

Some of them were in high school when they started with him, and now are married with children of their own. They really have an amazing community.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been fairly smooth. Since the 2 of us met back in 2010, we have slowly been growing and expanding our reach in our communities. It gets difficult to build your name and brand when you are renting space as a trainer in someone else’s facility. It has been a true blessing to be able to open up our own gyms in the last 2 years.

Jay & May Complete Health – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
There are a lot of gyms in Del Mar, and especially in La Jolla. There are also a lot of trainers, and a lot of different forms of exercises. We incorporate a lot of different forms and styles (circuit, strength, Pilates, boxing, kettlebell, cardio, etc). We’ve been trained in several modalities, but the great thing about “personal training,” is that we have the ability to customize our daily workouts to our client’s needs. Not everyone wants (or can) do the same workout. With our vast knowledge and experience, we don’t “plan” the workouts ahead of time. We wait to see how our client feels that day, we reflect on the last workouts we’ve done together, we talk about plans for the following week (travels, hikes, and down-time) and then make immediate decisions on what we will be doing for the session. Our sessions are real-time for our clients. If their shoulder is bothering them that day, then we work on something else. That is a huge benefit you can’t get in the group settings and class settings.

We are known for results and community. Because our goal is to give clients what they are requesting, we really get to know them (in every aspect of their lives). Health is a lifestyle (nutrition, exercise, rest, work, family, etc). We see most of our clients 2-4 times each week. That’s more than we see most of our family and friends. We spend a lot of time with them. So what makes us the most proud is that we retain our clients for many, many years. That must mean we are doing something right!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is referrals and retention! If people are bringing their family and friends in, then that means they are happy with our services.
