Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayra Spillane.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Ever since I was a little girl, I loved to design my own Halloween customs and arrange little pots of flowers. I did not know that I had a hidden passion for art and design inside me.
About 14 years ago I was working with special education students in the transition program, and my job duty was to take the students to various job sites. One was a flower shop; I immediately fell in love with the idea of becoming a designer and creating beautiful floral pieces for my customers to enjoy. I loved the interaction with the customers, and the dreamed that one day I would be designing flowers for weddings!
So I bought a small flower shop and named it The singing florist. I wanted to be different and wanted people to remember me.
That is when I decided to deliver flowers with a song to make it extra special!
Unfortunately, now that the business has grown I only deliver with an acapella song for special occasions.
Please tell us about your art.
Being in the floral business, you need to see and understand the customer’s vision, meet their expectations, and bring them to life. When I see a bride’s face filled with joy and excitement after receiving her bridal bouquet, I know that this is what I was destined to do.
What inspires me is knowing that every person is different and unique and that when I design a floral piece, it will be created especially for that person.
I want my customers to take away the feeling that they are very special to me and I want them to know that I am very passionate about what I do.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Working with flowers brings a lot of joy and fun, so when I design I just turn on the music and get to business, I am always surrounded by people walking in and out of my shop so I can’t say that I’ve ever experienced the feeling of being lonely.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I have a beautiful flower boutique where my customers can visit me and look around since I have a variety of props and décor pieces that can be incorporated in their events. I also have a website and Instagram that shows most of my work. I do a few open houses and bridal shows a year, especially at the Chula Vista golf course and the Bali Hai Restaurant where I am a preferred vendor as well as bridal shows at military bases in San Diego.
