Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Jolic.
Megan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always found comfort & inspiration in the kitchen. I began making my own granola about eight years ago. A friend had given me some homemade granola that tasted good but was filled with added oils and sugar. I thought to myself, “I can make a better tasting healthier version of this.” So, I went to work! Over the years, I’ve made varied versions of Peanut Butter Crunch Granola and that has been a staple in our pantry ever since. In late fall of 2018, my daughter & I attended a “Holiday DIY Gift Making” workshop. One recipe was for a Grain-Free Gingerbread Granola. After my first bite, I again found myself saying, “I can make a better tasting healthier version of this!” And I went to work. I pride myself of creating gluten-free, oil-free, refined sugar-free recipes. Delicious food doesn’t have to include added oils & sugars. Once I perfected my Gingerbread Granola I decided to explore other flavors so I created Pumpkin Spice.
For the holidays, I enjoy giving handmade gifts to friends, neighbors & teachers. I joyfully packaged the granola including a note sharing the ingredients and that it was all handmade. Well, the response to my granola was overwhelming! Each person asked where and how they could buy my granola. An idea was born! I’ve always known that I would love to share my passion for creating flavorful food with those around me ~ I just didn’t know how that would take shape. My belief is that food is a gift ~ a delicious & healthy gift. We should love our lives to the fullest while having a full (& happy!) belly. “Live fully! Love, Granola.”
I began the “behind the scenes” work. Creating a logo, packaging and what the next steps would be to share Love, Granola. San Diego has an abundant farmers markets each week so I knew that was a wonderful way to utilize my skillset and have the opportunity to share my love for granola. January 18, 2019 Love, Granola launched on social media (Instagram & Facebook @lovegranolasandiego). By mid-February I had enrolled in a Vendor 101 course offered through San Diego Markets; Pacific Beach Tuesday, Little Italy Wednesday & Little Italy Saturday Mercato). It was a step-by-step course on how to take your business to the Farmers Markets. I couldn’t have been more excited and motivated! My goal was to be in my first market by April 1.
By this point, I had already outgrown my home kitchen and needed to prepare for the future. After a few unsuccessful attempts in securing kitchen space, I was fortunate enough to find a vegan kitchen that needed a tenant. YES! After a few delays with local permitting, I received approval to be a market vendor on April 30! Love, Granola is now available at Pacific Beach Tuesday’s, 2-7pm, Little Italy Wednesday’s, 9-1:30p, North Park Thursday’s, 3-7:30p & Del Sur/4S Community Market the 1st Sunday of each month. My granola will also be appearing periodically at Little Italy Saturday Mercato!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, yes. I went to the local Health Department to receive my Temporary Food Facility Permit and was told that the kitchen I had hoped to rent from wasn’t authorized to sub-lease their space. Uh-oh!! So, back to square one and had to reschedule my first market.
It worked out for the best though. I was able to locate a more suitable space with a local (& much admired!) businesswoman. I’ve been in the kitchen now for two months and am able to produce 50-75 lbs of granola a week!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Love, Granola – what should we know?
