Meet Melanie and Tim Powers of Mel & Tim Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie and Tim Powers.

Melanie and Tim, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Mel & Tim Photography began in 2009 as a boutique husband and wife photography duo. We both were at turning points in our lives but on the same path. 2009 was a big year for Mel & Tim. It was the year we got married and our careers have taken a wonderful detour towards professional photography.

With me, (Mel) being business savvy and a photographer with heart plus Tim a skilled on photographer with mad charismatic skills. We have been grateful to have met wonderful people and share a special part of their lives. Since then the growth has been tremendously extending to corporate events and editorial photography. We are still here, going strong, and it’s all due to our clients, friends, and family who have supported us along this journey.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As with any business undertaking, the path is never clear and smooth. There have been a few roadblocks.

On the business side, it’s deciding whether to keep our business boutique or scale up. As artists, that’s always a struggle because the artist in us is passionate about the art form’s integrity. We see a vision through our lens and turn that into photographic art. We want to earn that right to say that’s our image.

Then as business owners, we need to strategize to stay competitive and hustle to make a living. Doing this can take the fun away from what has always been a passion.

We’ve found a balance, we decided to do a little bit of everything: headshots, product photography, life portraits, weddings, corporate events… yes we do it all now. We’re still Mel & Tim for the smaller gigs and have a core awesome team to help us out with the bigger gigs if needed.

Within ourselves, it’s growing as a photographer. Sure it’s easy to gain the technical skills as that can be taught. The matter is keeping our art…our photography inspiring to us. As mentioned earlier, we capture a little bit of everything and anything in between. This keeps our creative juices flowing. Being able to take on every photography challenge makes us sharp and relevant.

I suppose Mel & Tim can be defined as experts for having been in the professional photography industry for 8 years now. Our style and business approach have come a long way, but we always have to look back to where we started to remind us of our spark and love for photography.

Mel & Tim Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Mel & Tim Photography is a boutique and professional photography business. We are trigger happy photographers for corporate events, weddings, family milestones and individuals that need much more than a selfie shot.

It’s difficult to state which kind of photography we specialize in because we do it all now. Although we are known for our chemistry as a couple who work unbelievably well together! We feed off each other, inspire one another, and always support each other. When you’ve got that healthy work environment, it shows in our work. Good vibes allow us to draw out that chemistry between us and our wonderful subjects that we work with.

We’re proud to say that we are still here! Having done research earlier on our business set up, I’ve read that most professional photographers don’t go beyond 5 years. Sadly it’s true for various reasons. We’ve managed to stay married (wink), have fun working with each other, and keep our business strong.

There are many photographers and good ones too! We are different because we are Mel & Tim like any individual unique by nature. We try to keep unique and define our expressive photography style. We purposefully try not to over examine or compare ourselves with other photographers. We want to be inspired, not replicate anyone else.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
It’s no longer all about numbers for us. We prefer to work at competitive rates with people who love our work vs work with someone willing to pay beaucoup bucks just to have someone point the trigger.

Through the years its come to being happy about our photography and surrounding ourselves with wonderful people. We get excited to see our photos on the wall, used as a profile picture, shared on social media, and featured in an editorial. That is our definition of success.

When we have returning clients that have become friends that’s a marker for us. Every year more and more clients are returning to us. We’ve built rapport and relationship with our customers. All of our clients have been referral based or they loved our work.
