Meet Melissa Bertrand-Cage of Originality BarberSalon in Northpark

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Bertrand-Cage.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Well, I moved to San Diego three years ago, following behind my husband. When we got here he found me a job at another salon doing hair. Within the two years at that salon, I build my clientele and work my butt off all day.

My husband came up with the idea to open up a barbershop but I didn’t want to pay both booth rent and salon rent; therefore I went into business with him. I found the place and felt like it was perfect for us. I got to where I am today because I’m a hard worker and I try to be there for my clients.

I’m all about healthy hair; so my first priority is making sure all my client’s hair is healthy and growing. My second is making sure I have an open ear when my clients need to talk. I treat everyone as if they’re family. I the shop is a family oriented place.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it has not been a smooth road. The shop has been open for a little bit over a year and people still finding out about the shop. I thought about packing up a few times and going back to Los Angeles, but I thought about all the hard work and dedication I put in it.

Working with my husband can be a challenge sometimes and I try my best not to bring my personal business into the shop especially when I’m pissed off at him. Thank god there’s a door that separates us.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Originality BarberSalon – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My business is a barbershop and salon mixed together. The barber shop is in the front of the building because the barbers take walk-ins and the salon is in the back. The salon and barbershop are separated by a door so that there are two different vibes: plus the guys can get a little loud so I’m happy about the door. Myself specialize in natural hair care, weave, braids, etc. The barber shop specializes in all cuts and fades and all hair types.

I’m proud to say that I made it a year and that everyone who visits the shop loves the vibe and always come back. Being a barbershop and a salon sets us apart from other shops because most shops are not separated like us.

Mother’s can get their hair done and also bring their son to get a haircut or vice versa. We actually have a lot of families that come together to get their hair done altogether because we are a one-stop shop.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future is to expand and open a shop and Los Angeles. I also want to open a beauty supply store because I find that it’s hard to find certain products the I need. I also want to be a platform artist and work in the entertainment business.
