Meet Melissa McClure of Melissa McClure Photography in Oceanside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa McClure.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Melissa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I became interested in photography in High School (Fallbrook HS) when I learned that being the yearbook editor meant that I could hide in the dark room all period. I taught myself how to shoot film, develop and print it. I decided to major in Photojournalism in College and got a BA in that subject. After College I worked for a newspaper and wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Until a co-worker was getting married and couldn’t afford a “real” photographer. She talked me in to it and from that day on, I fell in love with weddings. The emotions of that special day whisk me away every time. I’m a total romantic. When I learned that destination weddings were a thing, I jumped on the chance to travel and photograph weddings.

Has it been a smooth road?
Being self-employed comes with so many struggles. There were months I wasn’t sure if I could make the rent. And there were months I could put a hefty down payment on a car. Income fluctuates in this industry since there is an off season. I had to learn how to market myself. Do some graphic design, even lived through an IRS audit. As a business owner we wear many hats and I feel that success comes when you realize you can outsource many things that you just aren’t good at and really stick to the ones you love. I still don’t love paying a huge chunk of my income to the IRS or paying full price for health insurance, but I wouldn’t give up the last 12 years of the freedom that comes with being your own boss for anything.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Melissa McClure Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’ve been photographing weddings for 12 years and specialize in destination weddings all over the world. I’ve flown to NYC, Hawaii, Thailand, Italy, France (plus many more) to photograph my amazing clients. I am so grateful for their trust in me capturing their special day. I’m proud of my networking skills that has allowed me to meet so many people in my industry and really be solidified as a wedding photographer in San Diego (Yes I shoot plenty of weddings here too!) My biggest accomplishment is when I hear from a client years later that they revisited their wedding photos and it brought them right back to the emotions they felt on that day. That is the most special to me.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that I live in a place that people choose to vacation to! Oh San Diego, you are so lucky to live here. But it’s not luck. It’s choice. Yes house prices are high and traffic is bad. But the 300+ days of sunshine and laid back attitudes make it all worth it!
