Meet Melissa Schwartz of Leading Edge Parenting in La Jolla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Schwartz.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Melissa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born an advocate for highly sensitive people. The academic and professional success I’ve achieved doesn’t hold a candle to the personal experience I bring to my work as an author, speaker and coach for parents of highly sensitive children. As an empath, I have always had the ability to feel other people’s emotions. It was so confusing to sense someone else’s experience, especially without realizing what was happening! As an adult, I have learned how to harness the gifts of being an energy reader without being overwhelmed.

Growing up I got the message that I was “too sensitive”, “too intense” and “made a big deal of nothing”. Looking back I realize that I was sensing subtleties that others didn’t notice, like a dog hearing a whistle that is silent to humans.

Today I support parents raising children just like me. One in five people are highly sensitive and therefore experience a stronger depth of processing, are more sensitive to subtleties, become more easily overstimulated and are more emotionally responsive than non-highly sensitive people.

What made me a challenging then is my superpower now! Being an empath allows me to decode misbehavior and give a voice to the legitimate needs of children. I have the unique ability to articulate the inner world of these kids and give parents and professionals step-by-step strategies to eliminate power struggles and inspire kindness, cooperation and responsibility.

I’ve been working with children for over fifteen years and co-founded Leading Edge Parenting and co-authored “Authentic Parenting Power” with my mom, Sandi Schwartz. She is an award-winning, internationally acclaimed expert in child development and a leader in transforming the way parents and educators respond to the needs of children.

She received her Masters Degree from Columbia University and leverages over forty years as educator, college professor, executive director, radio show host and keynote speaker.

I also co-authored “Under the Hood: A Manual to Understand the Inner Workings of Children” (which will be available on Amazon October 18, 2018) where we explore Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS, what highly sensitive people ‘have’), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) and SPSD- a newly coined acronym that honors those with Sensory Processing Sensitivity Divergence.

It’s my greatest joy to support parents and professionals around the world who want to learn MORE about highly sensitive and SPSD children.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The best part about coaching from my own life experience is that every obstacle has been a stepping stone. Each upset and wound offers insight and wisdom. Highly sensitive people are easily hurt by the desensitized world. We are often baffled by people that are unkind or seemingly oblivious.

The challenges I’ve experienced catalyzed my work. I was sitting in the back row at a talk my mom gave where she explained how different I was from my easy going, older brother. As she talked about my ‘flair for drama’ parents turned around and smiled at me sympathetically.

When the talk was over a handful of them came up to me and asked if they could talk to me, “You sound just like my child” they said over and over. It was then I realized every childhood drama was perfectly scripted for my life’s work to emerge.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Leading Edge Parenting – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Leading Edge Parenting provides parents and professionals with tools and resources to grow emotionally healthy children.

Our work is known for supporting families with children that are highly sensitive children or have been diagnosed with Anxiety, ADD/ADHD, Depression, Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD) and Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD).

We have an office in La Jolla and an international coaching practice supported over the phone and Skype. Both my mom and I speak around the country at schools and professional conferences.

One thing that sets us apart is we have created a free private Facebook group to grow our international community of highly sensitive families. We also offer a complimentary coaching session to new clients!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Recently I was filmed for a documentary, “Highly Sensitive Children and The Messages of Horses”. My new book “Under the Hood: A Manual to Understand the Inner Workings of Children” will be available on Amazon October 18, 2018.

I’m also excited to launch a group coaching program this fall where parents will receive weekly videos and on-going support to raise emotionally healthy, highly sensitive children.
