Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Varela.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I worked as a Receptionist/Executive Assistant for ten years with a background in Journalism and Event Planning. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mindset and started blogs back in the day, but it wasn’t until 2017 when I realized being an executive assistant wasn’t going to work for me anymore.
I started my business, Elevate, not only to help female entrepreneurs and small business owners harness the power of social media but to open up opportunities for myself in regards to my career path. It was during this tenure that I familiarized myself with all aspects of business in general. Being in love with entrepreneurship my whole life, I became a self-taught social media manager.
I went on to make a name for myself incorporating my event planning skills with social media management and marketing. In 2018, I moved my now thriving consultancy to San Diego which has led me to dominate a new market, and within a month of arriving in San Diego, I was offered a role as a Marketing Manager at a healthcare startup. I attribute my major career leap to my shifted mindset after I started my own business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, I had these self-limiting beliefs that I was only capable of being someone’s assistant. It took time and effort to educate, shift my mindset, exercise, and give gratitude to get where I am today. I had no idea how to start or manage a business, so I spent many late nights self educating on the latest digital trends. It all starts with mindset. Having the right mindset you can achieve anything you want you just have to put in the work.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Elevate – A Social Media + Creative Consultancy – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
After working for three years at a construction company, which is a male dominated industry, I had a strong desire to work with and empower female entrepreneurs. I’ve spent almost two years on this journey and it has been incredible to watch my clients’ businesses flourish. Their success is truly my reward!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Yes! Within the next 6 months I plan to roll out Social Media and Marketing workshops both online and in person in San Diego so stay tuned!
