Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith McConvill.
Meredith, the Co-Founder and CEO of Top Rope Media, lives and breathes adventure!
A native New Yorker, Meredith did not have a ton of access to the outdoors and wide open spaces. However, each summer her parents transported their family to the Jersey Shore where Meredith spent her days building forts in the sand dunes, catching blue claw crabs off their neighbor’s dock and swimming in the ocean.
Years later, armed with her Master’s degree in Marine Science, and an apartment in New York City, Meredith still found ways to get outside and enjoy nature as an avid runner, rock climber, soccer player, scuba diver and snowboarder. All the while she managed marketing, events and fundraising for New York City’s Parks and Recreation.
Meredith has traveled across the globe, working in New York, Australia, Italy and Greece, before finally settling in San Diego, California in 2004. Today she works with outdoor brands, health and wellness clients, athletes and adventurers to help them with their story.
Meredith also gives back and loves to work with organizations that share her passion for adventure and the outdoors. She excels at pitching for both athletes and non-profits she’s passionate about. Meredith’s work has generated over $2M in corporate sponsorships, grant funding and donor support.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a gravel road at best. I guess if I wanted smooth pavement, New York City would have been the place to stay! I enjoy the outdoors and have worked for a long time in marketing and fundraising for outdoor recreation and lifestyle brands. It’s challenging, and I recall in my 1st role with New York City’s Parks & Rec, my parents thought I was going to be a Park Ranger.
Not that there is anything wrong with being a park ranger, however when you grow up in a family that worked on Wall Street, they didn’t have any other reference point except for Yogi Bear and Ranger Smith. That did not stop me from continuing along this path to work in the outdoor industry. In fact, it’s led to some amazing opportunities to work with incredible Olympic athletes and those that share my passion for the outdoors.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Top Rope Media – what should we know?
Top Rope Media creates and executes on cost-effective marketing strategies. This could mean email campaigns and marketing automation for one client, and managing brand ambassadors for another. I also live and breathe adventure and I am often the persona my clients are trying to reach. I am most proud of my ability to not only assess my client’s needs but also to roll up my sleeves and get shit done.
When I first created Top Rope Media, I had 1 client that I created marketing strategies for. It was high-level, and I trained both them and their staff in how to run marketing campaigns across a variety of platforms from direct mail to email, Facebook to Google AdWords.
During this time in 2016, the gig economy was growing stronger, and many Americans were turning their side hustle into a full-time business. They did not have a team of people to support them. Instead of simply providing the roadmap, I could support them by taking the wheel and driving their marketing efforts.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Staying true to your values, and in my case, it’s Creativity, Efficiency, Perseverance and Adventure.
